If you are looking for a good restaurant guide or shopping and hotel guide this is it and this information takes up at least 70% of the book. There is some useful information on the history of the area but at the end of the day I wish I had not bought it as it was pretty useless and also bulky to travel with. The layout of the book is confusing and there is a lack of focus and also a lack of real perception of the area from the point of view of the tourist. However there is a surprising general lack of tourist information available, the local 'tourist maps' available free are pretty useless and there is little to help the visitor, for example, absolutely no road signs (except the one as you leave East Hampton which reads 'New York 90 miles'), therefore the book can be useful in order to gain an overview of what is there, but with far far too much information on eating, sleeping and shopping and little advice on how to get around.

This guide really got down to the nitty gritty of the area. The only thing I thought it was missing was pictures. I feel as if the words on the pages told a story but would have liked pictures to complete the package. It apparently wasnt what the author wanted to do and that's fine. All GOOD!

Man findet alles von der Geschichte, über die Orte und Sehenswürdigkeiten bis hin zu Hotels, Restaurants und Geschäften. Eine ideale Vorbereitungen für einen Urlaub in den Hamptons.

With a trip to New York City and Long Island coming up I bought this book to help me in my research for the journey. It is very clear that the author, Suzi Forbes Chase really loves Long Island and her knowledge and enthusiasm for the area really shine through.
The book contains a great deal of useful information and interesting facts about the area and a lot of effort was clearly put into the writing of it. The only thing that lets it down, and the reason it gets 4 rather than 5 stars, is the poor quality of the maps. They are very lacking in detail. No parks or beaches seem to be shown and there is no scale so one cannot tell how far it is from one place to another.

Nonetheless, I still very much recommend this book to travellers to the area, just buy another map before you go!
