George Otto Simms is a renowned authority on the Book of Kells and describes this magnificent manuscript. He talks about the monks who made the book and explains the background of the book.
First of all, this is a very short, but concise book of a mere 72 pages, with several wonderful B & W line illustrations and 8 full page color photographs of pages from the book.In total, there are 60 color and B & White photographs and illustrations. He tells us in what monastery it was made and what monks made it.It was made about 800AD,and the text as well as the lettering and artwork was done by different monks ,probably over quite a long time.He also describes how the materials were made that were used in producing the book.
As to what the book is about, first it is written in old Irish, although there are English translations. The book is 13 1/2 X9 1/2 inches and has 16 to17 ,sometimes 18 lines per page. The book covers the Gospels of Mathew ,Mark,Luke and John from the New Testement,;which tell the story of the life and work of Jesus Christ.
Since 1661 the Book of Kells has been kept in the Library of Trinity College,Dublin. It is kept in a climate controlled case, and pages are turned on a regular basis. The book can be viewed by the public.
