Best of the book: Jack Hartt's positive attitude, gratitude for those who've helped it become the beautiful, quality park it is today and love of the park and its resources shines through. Worst: (1) understanding prohibitive costs involved in color versus black and white-yet still wishing that it weren't true because color photos would raised the quality of the book to an even higher level (would have needed to go to six stars) and (2) although there are detailed sections about the geology of the region, the history of the Pass and its people, the only references are a list of "Suggested References" at the back of the book, so there is no way to know which book(s) he used as references for writing the various sections. In summary, a top notch guide to everything about DPSP. My recommendation: unless you are a local, pick up a copy about a month before your trip to the park so that you can savor the huge amount of information contained within before you arrive.
