OK, I admit that this book had sat in my Kindle for a while. I have no idea what put me off at first, maybe there was quite a few ARC I need to review first at the time. Anyway, after I started this book, I just couldn't put it down. I absolutely LOVE it! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! I love the characters, I love the mystery, I love the suspense, I love the romance built between the two main characters, well... I simply love everything about this book.
Brooke Fairfax was a complicated character. She's vulnerable, yet so strong. She was grieving, yet she could still care for other when situation called for it. She grew up in this book. Declan O'Roark, a wealthy and mysterious businessman, just the perfect man for Brooke. He could be very patient, a bit... er, well, quite arrogant, yet so thoughtful and protective about people he cared. I love that I got to see Declan's thought here and there. They simply compliment Brooke's thought. I also love that although the attraction between them happened immediately, the way to HEA was not rushed. And due to Brooke's state of mind, it was really more believable when the end of this book was an HFN (happily for now).
The mystery was full of twist and turn, I just couldn't guess it until Brooke knew it. As I'm a huge fan of mystery books, I always love books that I couldn't guess who the culprit was. The suspense also in the right amount. Not high strung all the time, but palpable throughout the book with a bit of relieve here and there.
So looking forward to the next books in the series. Write faster, please :)
I enjoyed this "whodunit" book. Seeing how the case unfolds and watching the interplay between not only Brooke and Declan, but within her group of agents who have missed her for the past year while she grieves the loss of her husband. Brooke begins to realize that she needed to live again even if she has some unfinished business. The perpetrator of the crime wasn't a complete surprise, but the motive was bit lame..we still don't know what happened to the missing poison and we didn't find out what Declan's siblings were going to do with the poison in the first place. Regardless of these small issues, I enjoyed the book immensely and look forward to the next one. I have high hopes for Declan and Brooke.
Let me start by saying this is a good book! The mystery is tight, the characters are strong and I kept picking it up throughout the day to get in just a few more pages. The attraction between Declan and Brooke gets you hooked but then....it's just fizzlie....I could have been more-the author has proven the talent is there. So you see where my "aha moment" comes in. The entire time I was reading it felt more YA.
I'm not a fan of YA simply because, well I'm not a YA and I want the sex and everything else that comes along with big girl books. Now having said that this is an awesome book-if you're happy with a steamy look and then we all wake up and have our morning coffee than you will 5 star this book. AND besides the "romance" part of the book, it is a very well written, fun read.
As an avid reader I am always on the lookout for a new author, and I was delighted to find one. I usually have more in the blah pile than the yay pile. This was well paced with good characters, and while I did read another book while reading this one, it was only because I was reading one on Kindle and one on my work pc.
I have already downloaded the 2nd book, and can't wait to get started on that. I really liked that Declan was not overwhelming as some billionaire types seem to be, he respected and trusted Brooke. Liked the way the storylines twisted together and the various mysteries. Good theme and none of it was too convuluted so you could easily follow and track and there were no crazy rabbit trails.
I would have been happy if I had purchased this book.
