Fontova gets right to the work of debunking familiar notions of Argentinan revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevera; by the end of the preface, he's pinned 14,000 executions on Guevera and credited positive portrayals to the public relations work of Castro and the laziness of biographers. The critical attack continues throughout, combining the testimonies of former revolutionaries and Cuban refugees to assemble a damning portrait of a man lauded by everyone from Jean-Paul Sartre to Jon Lee Anderson. According to Fontova, the real Che was "a revolutionary Ringo Starr" who "fell in with the right bunch and rode their coattails to world fame." Presenting a failed physician, an inept guerrilla and a hapless sycophant, Fontova adds insult to injury by claiming Che was "deathly afraid to drive a motorcycle." Fontova's charged language keeps things interesting, if occasionally dubious; midway through the book, after asserting that Che enjoyed killing dogs, Fontova concedes that, "You might put down your book here and think, this has to be propaganda." Though propaganda probably colors any consideration of this controversial figure, Fontova makes a convincing case that, in the words of one former political prisoner, "There was something seriously wrong with Che Guevera."

Humberto Fontova, who left Cuba in 1961 at age seven, has written for several conservative magazines and is the author of Fidel: Hollywoods Favorite Tyrant. He has appeared on many radio and television shows and is active in the Cuban American community.

This is one of the few books about Mr. Guevara that tells the truth about his homicidal, psychopathic lifestyle. Many US historians refuse to use refugee sources as they insist that the refugees are "disgruntled" and "biased." If historians applied that standard to the study of Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, they would only have taken information on the Holocaust from Eichmann and Streicher. This book points out that far from "starving illiterate farmworkers" the farmworkers in Cuba earned more than those in Belgium, Germany, and several other European nations. Cuba had more doctors and dentists per capita than the US or the UK - and there was a waiting list of Europeans waiting to immigrate to Cuba. From the third highest standard of living in the Western hemisphere and a First World economy, Fidel and Che managed to turn Cuba into a malnourished hell hole where the daily "ration" of food is less than the minimum the King of Spain mandated for slaves in the 1840s. It tells the story of how everyday Cubans fled, not with their wealth, but often without their earrings! How Cuba went from having had an elected Black President, Black government ministers, and Black senators to having Blacks so underrepresented that they comprise only 0.08% of the ruling Communist Party. This is the story of how small farmers continued to fight against Che and Fidel until 1966, even though JFK and the British were preventing any assistance from reaching the brave farmers. It tells the story of the institution of segregation on Cuban beaches, and the extreme racism of Che Guevara and most of the "revolutionaries." It also tells the story of how the Bolivian peasants were so enamored of Che that they not only kept the Bolivian military apprised of his location, but they wished to be inducted into the armed forces so that they could hunt down this massively offensive foreigner. The book also notes that the US boycott had minimal impact on Cuba, that only 5% of foreign investment in Cuba was from the US - and that Che so totally destroyed the economy that he was reduced to draining the blood from the many scheduled for execution and selling it to other Communist countries. Prisoners were drained and then dragged and propped up to be shot, and Che told his father - and others - that he enjoyed killing people.

What a mish-mash

The author writes as if the reader has intimate knowledge of Guevara. There's no sense of timing. Instead he jumps from one year to another on the same page. One event to another in a haphazard way. He describes a terrorist plot to blow up national monuments here in the US and never explains who got away, why they got away, and leaves you with some unknown participant as the fall guy. Don't waste your money on this all-over-the-place book.

I'm not a fan of Che Guevara. There are aspects of this man's life that are not indicative of a person who wanted socialism; something that most intellects who have scrutinized his life can understand. Yes Che was responsible for the murders of hundreds. Yes these people were sent to their executions without a judicial system in place. To send a person to their death, just because you like watching them die, is dishonorable. In the same light, there are some discrepancies in the book. Che did receive his medical degree. He studied medicine at Buenos Aires in 1951, left school, and returned to earn his degree in 1953. He just never took medicine seriously. You have to read this book with a grain of salt. Some want to hail this man as a martyr, and rebel. Those who were affected by his ruthless murdering rampage, and his ideologies on making the "bourgeois" suffer (as well as his intent to want to destroy three U.S. national landmarks), well, there is at least some truth down the middle when it comes to the myth and the man. You really need to formulate your own opinion when reading biographies, and not necessarily take everything as "truth."

Maybe the fact that I am a victim of the Marxist ideas I was a fan too a long time ago, and I know how much harm this ideology has caused to my Latin America, I think now that many more people should have access to this true stories that help put this man in his right place in history.

I like how this true history disproves the many false accounts of Che as a supposed hero from the naive young rebellious kids. I love hip hop and rock but socialism is evil, so I am pleased to not be ‘cool’ along with the others who’s minds have been poisoned with a sexy rebellious narrative comprised of lies. I find humor in the fact that the abysmal higher education is taught by foolish graying kids who profess to know facts and seduce our best and brightest into an insidious sleepwalk to totalitarian servitude.

I have just read this book and am glad I did. Until recently I confess I knew little when it comes to Cuba and the so-called revolution there. This book exposes the lies, which I, and the rest of the world, had been fed about the transition, which took place in 1959. We all know that the useful idiots still abound. You cannot go out anywhere without seeing one of those damn T-shirts! Che was a murdering terrorist who, with Fidel Castro, created a terrorist and feudal/slave State. I also recommend:
Against All Hope: A Memoir of Life in Castro's Gulag: A Memoir of Life in Castor's Gulag, by Valladares, Armando. This will confirm much of what Mr Fontova writes in this excellent book.
