This book was a page turner. I found it well written and intriguing, with a very well managed sense of tension. The characters were believable and the author had a good grasp of the psychological consequences of childhood trauma. My only reservation revolved around the children--their dialogues were often not developmentally appropriate for their age--particularly Sally, who was way more precocious and insightful, not to mention articulate, than even a gifted 9 year old girl. The ending also felt a bit rushed, as the psychological consequences of some revelations seemed curiously minimized. But overall, a great summer read.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed and Dunmore is an excellent writer. She is definitely more interested in characters and mood than plot and it works well here. As some others have noted the plot is a slow crawl which didn't prevent me from enjoying the book but does prevent it from being "5 stars."

One wishes the characters used more sense than sensibility in this typically British way of never speaking forthrightly about issues to which answers were just a word or two away.
Confounding decisions and actions were maddeningly used to advance the plot.

Dunmore is a wonderful writer. She's also a poet, and she shows her poetic sensitivity in this story of espionage within the British Admiralty.
An earlier book The Siege, seems to have been a breakout book for her fiction, and since then she's gone from strength to strength.
This book, about a loyal, hard-working public servant who is accidentally caught up in a web of espionage, is immensely readable, It's remarkable not only for Dunmore's skill in plot and subtle character development, but for her insights into how good people can end up in bad situations, simply for trying to help an old friend.
