This is especially true if you’re a woman, trans, and/or nonbinary person. This very readable novella-length essay by Sudjic examines that, and many other aspects, of the aftermath of exposing oneself in writing. I found it extremely helpful as I grappled with the potential consequences of telling my story so vulnerable in my memoir OPEN.

Not just another book about anxiety

I was introduced to Olivia Sudjic, and this book, via a BBC R4 'Start the week' discussion on 'Safe spaces and snowflakes' - 19th Nov 2018 - it's available as a podcast & I highly recommend it. Approximately 30 mins later I had ordered her book (though she referred to this as an essay..I'm sure there is some academic definition as to what is one or the other..however I shall refer to it as a book). Incidentally, Olivia Sudjic came across as a thoughtful, considered, knowledgeable and insightful individual with a requisite lexicon of explanations and expressions to convey eloquently her thoughts and feelings, she also had a very enjoyable 'radio voice' too. The succinct explanation of her struggles with anxiety wasone of those light-bulb moments for me. I have replayed what she said over and over, first in disbelief that she could succinctly explain in less than 200 words what I've been struggling to articulate for most of my adult life, and then following a short period of self-flagellation, in glowing admiration, after all she is a writer so she is qualified to find the words this chemist could not.

To the book! A 'pocket book' that I devoured insatiably from receipt yesterday and am re-reading as I write this review. Ms Sudjic, boldly, shares her anxieties she has about: (her) age; of social media; of the 'imposter syndrome'; and the unequal judgement that female writers are subjected to.

As a (fast approaching) entrant into the quinquagenarian league, and as a woman involved in STEM for over 30 years, a lot of what Ms Sudjic has written resonates loudly with me and my experiences...though thankfully I was spared Social Media judgement until I managed to grow some skin and nurture it until it became thick enough to be able to protect me.

If you want a non-medical, but as valid, insight into anxiety - get this book
