I purchased this unit for our home, it was installed under the kitchen sink. Due to my hobby (obsession) of salt water reef tanks, throughout the years I have purchased and used numerous reverse osmosis deionization units from many various companies. The unit I currently use for my reef tank doesn’t require a storage tank but came with a dual TDS (total dissolved solids) meter and deionization stage to remove the last of the TDS. That unit cost twice as much as the unit from Express Water, HOWEVER it falls short of the quality unit I just installed from Express Water. This 5 stage unit is far more superior to the one I paid twice as much for.
For example, this product takes into consideration the task of replacing the filters, they equipped their units with swivel connection to allow for the membrane canister to be open without having to remove the ¼” tubing (which illuminates the possibility to form leaks after a few times of disconnecting and reconnecting the line)
They also perform a pressure test of the membrane canister to ensure no leaks prior to shipment (no other unit that I purchased in the past did that)
The instruction booklet was very clear and even offered color pictures, diagrams and schematics to aid in easy installation. And to go one step further, each connection that needed to be made to the inlet water, waste water, storage tank, and faucet were labeled on the unit itself. This company clearly understands the complexity of tackling a task like this and has taken every step to eliminate frustration, making it easy for just about any skill level to tackle this job.
After installation I followed the instructions and allowed the tank to fill up and then drain it completely, the water was blackish/grey (which is normal due to the final carbon filter being flushed out) then after filling it again I tested the TDS, 7ppm which tells me the unit is doing its job but I knew it could do better than that, in which I then emptied the tank for a second time and let it fill back up. The TDS meter reading the second time was 2ppm…. MUCH BETTER.
You can’t have the good without the bad: the provided ½” slip joint adapter for the feed water wouldn’t work for the shut off valve I had under the sink, my valve has a 3/8” outlet. Luckily I had the right 3/8” adapter handy in my miscellaneous parts from all the other units I’ve had over the years and installed it instead. I’m not sure how feasible it would be to add that adapter to the list but it will save some frustration. I looked on line and currently this part can be purchased for $13 (JG Speedfit ASVPP1LF 3/8-Inch by 3/8-Inch by 1/4-Inch Angle Stop Adapter Valve). Please be sure to take that into consideration when purchasing this unit.
And Lastly, The wrench that was provided is to aid opening the large canisters during filter replacement. However the membrane housing is slightly smaller and the wrench provided will not aid in opening it. This housing was really hard to open and takes some muscle power to get it open. There is a filter wrench to open housing however it wasn’t provided. I can’t provide a name or part number for that though because there’s many options to choose from. However for me, I was lucky enough to have one handy to get it open.
If those 2 concerns were addressed and rectified I would give this purchase and experience 5 gold stars. All in all, the best unit money can buy. I would recommend this unit to anyone that is in the market for a whole home RO unit.
This is my 3rd unit for the house one in downstairs kitchen and one upstairs as well, replacing a 12-year old system that's never caused a problem other than a leak in the UV two weeks ago. Sure I could have replaced just the UV but hey it's time for a complete new system.
Complaints about the clarity of the instructions are unfounded as far as I'm concerned. I was replacing a similar unit (different brand) but there were no parts of the old system re-used other than the metal fitting on the cold water pipe, which still required the new compression fitting. The only difficulty with the instructions was the slightly upgraded output faucet which was not covered, but easy to figure out the difference and install.
The main caution, as said by a few others, is to make sure you seat the tubes fully into the fittings... it's covered well in the manual and on youtube, but I still managed to have one leak afterward, which was hectic since I already had the unit on the wall of the cabinet and it was now full of water and pretty heavy. Push those tubes into the fitting HARD so you can feel when it goes that last 3/8 of an inch.
PROs vs the older unit:
1. Very very nice that they pre-assembled the filter portion, that saves probably 45 minutes for you.
2. Tubing diagram, in color, makes assembly and troubleshooting very easy.
3. This unit has about twice the water volume coming out of the faucet, which is nice if you're filling a coffee pot.
4. Extra Filters included
CONs vs older unit:
1. Does not include the UV sanitizer, and they point out twice in the instructions that you need that if you have any chance of microbial pollution. If you are using city water, it's probably not needed, but those of us in the country will need them.
2. Not one complaint about the purchased unit itself. Good quality.
I'm almost 75 years old and assembled this without help. I'm blind in one eye, a little senile, and have problems crouching for any period of time and even worse trying to get back up from under the sink. I'm sure it took me twice as long as most people, but the result was well worth it. I like the color coded tubing, easy to see where things go and come from under the sink.
Suggestions for easier assembly:
1. Install the faucet first, with the tubing left full length
2. Install the input line from the cold water pipe, leaving the tubing full length
3. Install the tank, tubing full length
4. Install the drain tube cut to the length since the junction with the sink drainpipe is near the front.
5. Place a large rectangular plastic dish pan in front of the cabinet and assemble the connections there, so that you can turn it on and check for leaks before hanging the unit on the cabinet wall. That way you can easily see and fix any leaks without making a puddle under the sink.
I was happy with the unit and I signed up for Amazon's home service for the first time. I selected a date and time for installation and the technician called that morning to make certain I was home. He installed everything perfectly for $150. He was polite, clean, and professional and hauled away my old system too! I am a happy customer!
