Top customer reviews
The quality is good, with solid triple-weighted pieces. This is a large regulation set suitable for both tournament and casual play. It is really satisfying to feel the solid weight of these pieces as you move them around the board. Their weight also makes them steady so your pieces won't tip in the heat of blitz play. There are mould lines as you would expect on any cast plastic pieces, but they are overall pretty clean. I scraped some extra plastic off the queen's crowns to clean them up a bit.
The bag is nice and has handles and a shoulder strap for carrying. It comfortably fits the included roll-up board, all the pieces for the set, and a chess clock with some room to spare if you want to add some notebooks or other odds and ends. There are also two pen/pencil loops to keep your writing materials in place. Everything seems protected inside and I would not worry about damage from reasonable use.
This is a basic vinyl roll-up board used by clubs and tournaments all over. At first it had a little bit of curl from storage, but I was able to play on it right away without any problems. After letting is sit out for a while it now lies flat with no problems. It rolls of quickly and neatly for storage and transportation and fits nicely into the bag.
The set is packaged thoughtfully with all items protected from damage in transit. The queens even had thin cardboard/paper wrapped around their crowns to prevent damage during transit. Everything is packaged in a manufacturer box and again an overbox from Amazon. The mail carrier would have to seriously abuse this thing to damage it.
If you're looking for a top quality, transportable set that that still has a great look and feel to it then I'd highly recommend this set. But as the title of my review implies, quality comes with a price. This is probably one of the most expensive sets of its kind. But hey, $40 for something that should last you many years of play isn't so bad. You can skimp and opt for a cheaper set, but you will regret it when you pick up hollow plastic pieces that feel like cheap child's toys. If you have the cash and are looking for a portable, durable, regulation chess set, then buy this!
I paid a little extra (really not much) for the weight of the pieces and the carrying bag. I didn't use it for over a year at one point and the vinyl board unrolled just fine and it's very useable.
The vinyl board is great plus it's numbered and letter, the pieces have great detail and feel, and you get a carrying case.
Mine doesn't have any defects at all, like one reviewer mentioned. I also noticed the sharp crown on the queens, but I think that gives it a feel of detail. I haven't bled or received any injuries and don't think my life is threatened by it, LOL! The knights and other pieces also have great detail, like textured horse's mane on the knight. Very great detail and feel!
Let me mention the price again. For any kind of weighted, detailed wood set, you'd be paying WAY more, 150 would be starting. This is a very sturdy, fun, easy set with a convenient carrying case. I love using it to review my game, play, and play out a computer game. Take it out and relive a classic game from the record books or bring it to a friend's house!
It's awesome, you will use it often, and it's a super super value for the price.
Highly recommended. Add a little extra money for heavy pieces and a case so you can use it often (pay for something you'll use), save the wood boards for overpriced decoration (yes, save and buy an expensive wood set anyway, they're cool)
The points are on the queens' crowns are also insanely sharp. So much so that they will draw blood if mishandled with any force or speed. As soon as the fumes had faded to a tolerable level (they're all gone, now) I resorted to taking nail clippers and a nail file to the points to shave them down to a safe ornamentation.
I also did two more modifications; I trimmed the excessive borders off the mat to make it more manageable, and I clipped the gaudy crosses off of the 4" kings. I then filed down the nubs / bases of the crosses so they were nice and rounded, and used nail polish to paint the nubs of the opposing colors (black for the white king and white for the black king). It makes the set almost look like the old Yugoslavian sets common in the 1980's.
After all of the above modifications, I am thoroughly pleased with the set. The pieces feel nice and smooth, and solidly weighted. The weights don't shake around in the pieces the way they do in so many other plastic, weighted sets. They are also very nice to look at. The pawns and bishop are especially simple, but elegant.
The set is so handsome, and of such quality, that I am no longer as eager to drop a few hundred dollars for a high-quality wooden set.
The bag feels a little janky, like it won't last long, but is really more of an extra benefit. The weighted, elegant pieces and the mat, alone, are worth the cost compared to other relatively similar sets that may be a little cheaper.
