Show Your Spouse They Are Louder Than the Stereo They Are Complaining About

I picked up one of these to help level match my subwoofer to my main stereo system. It has A and C weighting, and I used C as recommended. It worked great for this without needing to understand anything, right out of the box. I also used it to see if the level on the noise machine in my nursery was in the safe range, and adjusted it a little. There's a lot of buttons I probably won't use, honestly, but this is well made. It comes with a wind foam shield which you can use for outside applications. For quick estimates of sound volume (for unofficial purposes, I'm not sure how well calibrated this is) or for comparing two sources to see if they are the same, this is the right tool.

I also used this to point out to my wife that the home theater stereo wasn't too loud to do hearing damage. I then pointed out that her yelling at me at how loud the stereo was actually WAS loud enough to do hearing damage (90db!) and that she should probably volume down. Yeah, that didn't go over so well. I don't recommend using this for spouse volume testing. But for stereo equipment matching, oh yeah, it rocks for that.

Very Accurate!

I bought the SL510 model because this is a very affordable and compact Class 2 sound level meter (most of these usually begin from 200 USD) from a reputable manufacturer like Extech. I also have a Class 2 calibrator and could gauge the accuracy of the SL510. It came properly calibrated out of the box and was only within 0.1 dBA from the actual signal emitted by the calibrator. I corrected the difference and tested it again at 94 dBA, 104 dBA, and 114 dBA (all three at 1000 Hz), and each time the reading was absolutely accurate. To learn how to do calibration, you need to download the SL510 manual from the Extech website. I like the fact that calibration is done through pressing a combination of buttons and not by turning a potentiometer screw with a tiny screwdriver.

Calibration is very important and needs to be done once or twice a year, but if you need to use the device for measurements within a few months of receiving it, it is likely going to be very accurate out of the box and only within 0.1 or 0.2 dBA of the actual sound level. Keep in mind that you should always do a C-weighted reading, in addition to an A-weighted reading, especially if the sound is in the lower frequency spectrum. For instance, testing my white noise machine with the SL510 shows 41dBA and 49 dBC. Playing an electric guitar at "room-level" quieter amplification shows a reading of 57 dBA and 67 dBC. In each case, the dBC captures the volume of the lower frequencies better, even if the dBA scale is the one usually used to judge whether a hearing hazard exists. In fact, one should always use a Z-weighted reading to gauge sound hazards but only very expensive devices (that usually cost 1000+ USD) have an in-built Z-weighting.

Other impressions: the SL510 has an option to turn on a backlit display and can capture and record the peaks and minimums of longer sound measurements. It has a solid feel and there is definite weight to the microphone. It is powered by three AAA batteries, which is preferable to a 9V battery. It is fairly compact and very portable - can definitely fit in a jacket pocket, etc. It is made in Taiwan.

Overall, this is a great buy at this price level. There are many cheaper alternatives out there, but those come with very questionable pre-calibration and usually come with no instructions about re-calibration (I had to return one such a few months ago). The SL510, on the other hand, came properly pre-calibrated and the online manual is detailed and helpful. Last - this is a Class 2 meter, which can be used as evidence in court in any legal disputes where a sound measurement is necessary. Class 1 meters usually start around 600-700 USD and are too expensive for the average user. Class 1 and Class 2, by the way, are better than Type 1 and Type 2 meters (those last two are older standards used about 20+ years ago). If you want a relatively inexpensive but accurate sound-measuring device - this is one of the best options.

A very good sound level meter, but look out for the recalibration issue

Seemingly quite good. I won't address audiophile applications because I am not using the tool in that way. I wanted a device that would monitor sound levels in my neighborhood and on construction sites that I drive to so that I wouldn't have to rely on the assertions of others about actual and prospective noise impacts. This device is quite well suited for that. The MAX function allows you to catch peak impact noises, isolating them from the basic noise levels of the test area.

This device was designed as a temporary or moment-to-moment metering device. Individuals who have the need to trap data and transfer a stream to a computer record should look for a different type of tool or a device with a larger set of metering abilities.

The company delivers the device in calibrated condition, of course, but is inconsistent in its recommendation for calibration through time. In the accompanying user guide, recalibration is recommended before every use, especially if the instrument has not been used for some time. On the company's web site, recalibration is recommended once a year. Recalibration requires an additional device; Extech offers one that costs twice as much as the meter itself. Independent professionals or employees of sound analysis services won't be bothered by the expense, but casual users of the device may find that to be a large pill to swallow to keep a tool tuned up that is used only now and then.

I metered a television broadcast whose volume was set in the overlap zone for the device's high and low ranges and found the readings to be pretty much in agreement -- perhaps 1-2 dB apart. This was a rough eyeball comparison, not a serious attempt to determine the meter's consistency. My verdict is that the unit is easily good enough for occasional private party use and even quick professional determinations to guide expectations in a context where more extensive noise level studies are planned.

I tested this thoroughly in our microphone calibration room alongside our reference mic. Calibration at 1kHz 90dB SPL was spot on - it read 90.0! However, this is only part of the story. Tests at ten frequencies revealed that the A-weighting is nowhere near correct. Errors were: 50Hz +16dB, 100Hz +0.3dB, 200Hz +1.6, 2kHz +0.3 10kHz +13.5dB!! 12.5kHz +7.3dB.

The gross errors at 50Hz and 10kHz are totally unacceptable and massively outside the standard specification. The peak at 10kHz will make it read very high on noise sources with high frequency content. Note also that the minimum reading is 40dBA which makes it useless for measuring noise on fridges, air conditioning etc which normally fall in the range 20 - 35dBA. A shame as the analog bar is a nice feature.

Grosse déception avec ce Sonomètre.
Les fonctionnalités de base sont au rendez-vous. La précision est correcte. Et il y a même quelques bonnes surprises avec une vis de calibration, et une vis de fixation pour montage sur trépied. Si vous voulez utiliser ce sonomètre en utilisation de base "à main levée", très bien.

Mais alors, pourquoi cette mauvaise note?
Parce que j'avais acheté ce sonomètre spécialement pour relier la sortie analogique à un oscilloscope afin de pouvoir tracer les variations de niveau sonore. Hélas, à la sortie "AC", le sonomètre fournit un signal totalement inutilisable. À titre d'exemple, j'ai joint à ce commentaire un graphique montrant ce que je lis lorsque je balance un signal avec une amplitude de 100dB SPL. Si quelqu'un peut interpréter ça, merci de me le dire. À moins tout simplement que mon exemplaire ne soit défectueux? Bref, je renvoie le produit dés que possible...

I installed a new set of column speakers (JBL CBT100LA) in a new church and used the
