This is the most inexpensive device of its kind on Amazon - a guaranteed accurate hygro-thermometer. The outside sensor in the product photo is attached to a small cylinder-shaped arm affixed to the side of the unit.

All the twenty dollar type units that provide temperature and humidity levels will generally be in the correct range yet not with precision. Notice how the diligent reviewers of those cheap units cite comparisons with various hygro-thermometers to each other. In those citations, cheap units don't agree and it's impossible to know which is more correct.

Better to get one accurate unit and if needed, compare the others against it. This unit is accurate - guaranteed per the product description. The sensor is always on the outside of highly accurate units, and normally such units cost even more than this one.

My experience with this unit is positive. It's more accurate than the temperature gauges in my house that control heating and cooling, for example. I don't bother with other humidity reporting units because cheaper ones are notoriously inaccurate.

Extech makes many high-tech measuring devices, especially multimeters. The company is well-known to house inspectors and electricians.

I bought this as a test for my wifes Bikram Hot Yoga studio. 90 minutes in a 105F room at 40% humidity. I already have several other very expensive instruments in the room. I needed 6 of these to place around the room for the students to see. I watched this unit compared to the other units in the room. It was always within 4 tenths of a point on the temp and humidity of the other units. It is very precise. In addition to that even I can read it from 15 to 20 feet away. Understand, ExTech makes some very high end expensive instruments, they are a very technically sophisticated company. I will now go ahead and order 5 more of these units. I am very pleased with the results. A great price for a very sensitive instrument.

This was extremely accurate out of the box. The temperature was accurate to .1 degree, with reference to a high end Netatmo unit. The humidity was off by 4%, which is within the mfg. specs. I was able to calibrate it to 100% accuracy using a Boveda One Step Kit.

The surprising thing is how responsive this thing is. Just getting near it will change the readings, virtually instantly, no lag time. I think the fact this has an exterior sensor makes it far more responsive than one which is built into the unit, which many are.

A note on the picture. It looks much larger than it is, which is 4.25"x4", I wanted to show detail so I got in close.

Extech makes multimeters and other high-tech devices. They have tons of products and this one isn't even on their website.

But just check out their hygro-thermometer that costs about 3 more bucks than this one: Extech 445715 Big Digit Hygro-Thermometer.

If you compare, you'll see this guarantee under the product description of the one I linked:
"Accuracy: ±4%RH; ±1C/1.8F. Optional NIST traceable certificate satisfies ISO and. other regulatory body requirements for product accuracy. traceability to nationally recognized reference standards."

The difference is the humidity sensor is outside the unit. All the devices with it inside the unit will be less accurate than if it was outside the unit. Therefore, I recommend that if you're thinking of getting Extech, go with the one linked above. Also, Extech is way better than the twenty dollar unit manufacturers.

I purchased and use the product I linked above. See my Amazon Verified Purchase there.

After reading a lot of positive reviews for this Extech 445703 Hygro-Thermometer unit, I decided to order this rather pricy model so I could get the best accuracy for my heated well house application (especially with a focus on the relative humidity sensing aspect). I received this yesterday, set it up, and then decided to initially check its performance and relative accuracy against some of the other temperature and relative humidity devices I already have at my home. These include a Davis Vantage Pro weather station, two Davis Vantage Pro consoles, two Davis Weather Echo Plus units, and a Honeywell Vision Pro 8000 unit with dehumidification control.

The Extech unit read 22% RH on start up and it just stayed there while the temperature reading did change as it equilibrated to the interior temperature of my home. I then started moving the Extech unit around to the other locations as my other instruments. Within approximately 15 minutes, the Extech unit temperature reading was essentially the same as the other devices (typically within a few tenths of a degree). However, while RH ranged from 15% to 16% with my other devices, the Extech unit continued to read 22% RH. After fooling around for a couple more hours with no better results, I decided to reset and clear the Min/Max memories to see if that would do anything. Unfortunately, the RH reading went back to 22% and stayed there.

This morning I decided to move the Extech unit into our master bath room where after two steamy hot showers, the unit still read 22% RH, where I am sure the RH must have been 100% or pretty close to it.

At this point, I am going to contact Amazon to replace this obviously defective unit. If the next one acts the same way, I will request a refund and get a different brand/model.
