I have been testing water from tap, reverse osmosis, big berkey, and now custom water filters I am building. And wow this shows how much PPM of fluoride is in the water as well as water temp. This in combination with my TDS PPM gauge tells me a lot about the water quality.

What I found was Reverse Osmosis took tap water from 1.7 ppm to .3 fluoride, Big Berkey went from 1.7 to .3 fluoride, and with my friends refrigerator filter in combo with the Reverse Osmosis got fluoride to 0.0!!

This is a great way to test fluoride without spending $200 a pop on scientific tests.

I have been using this instrument for 4 years and found that for the most part it works okay, however at times it has been known to suddenly stop working (it doesn't give a reading above 1 and/or has a strange flashing symbol in place of a number) for no apparent reason. In 4 years I've sent 2 units back to the manufacturer who sent replacements, but did not explain what was wrong or how to avoid future problems. I take good care of the instrument - cleaning, calibrating and storing correctly. The unit stopped working again a couple of weeks ago and I have to assume it needs a new electrode, even though there was no 'RENEW' signal (I've never actually seen the symbol the whole time I've used the meter). I do find I'm left guessing about what to do to make the meter work again if it packs up! Something else that bothers the heck out of me is that the electrode needs to be replaced fairly often (every 6 months - using it on average 2 to 4 times per week) - and $39+ each time hurts (and forget the refillable model too - never worked again after it needed refilling).

This tester works perfectly and is identical to other instruments costing $100 more. It comes with reagent tabs, but eventually you will have to purchase more tabs. Owning a tester allows you to monitor the viability of your fluoride filter and to make educated choices regarding various bottled drinks and your municipal water supply. Bone char or high quality reverse osmosis are the best filter options, but eventually the bone char gets saturated and the membrane breaks down in the reverse osmosis filter, so it pays to test every few months. If you are reading this, you understand that fluoride is a toxin, not a nutrient. Highly recommended.

The ExStik pH100 does not work. If I had the time, I'd make a video review to go along with these words. Even after calibration, using ExTech's own solutions, the pH100 fails to read pH levels anywhere near-accurate. It randomly reports its 'findings', even when using the same sample being tested. The fault may be with the included pH electrode (and sealed solution), which you have no way of knowing the condition or age of, because it's not packaged separately or appropriately for sensitive electronics. For the cost of this item, you'd expect some level of quality. Look elsewhere, because this product will disappoint both you and your wallet. But, if you still want to buy this piece of junk, I'll mail you mine for just the cost of shipping. You'll still be getting ripped off, but you won't feel so bad as purchasing at full price.

I've tested various brands of bottled water with this as well as my city's tap water and it seems to function properly. For instance, it gives a reading of 0.0 ppm for Glaceau's Smart Water brand, which is distilled water. My city's water report gives a measurement of 0.73 ppm of fluoride for the local tap water, and I got a reading of 0.7 ppm with this product while measuring the tap water, so that checked out. I've also tested water purified via reverse osmosis and this meter consistently gave a reading of 0.0 to 0.1 ppm.

It's important to recalibrate the meter often though, as well as adding TISAB solution to the water that you're assessing for accurate results.

Excited at first and then let down...

Nowhere does it tell you on Amazon.com or at the MFG's website that you also are required to purchase 1ppm fluoride solution in order to calibrate it. The TISAB tablets do NOT calibrate the meter. The 1ppm fluoride solution runs ~$60.00 for a 500ml bottle. So all together I would have ended up spending $203.25 for the meter PLUS $60.00 to calibrate it for a total of ~$270.00. I have prime so I didnt have to pay for shipping but had I not had prime, i guess i would have been another $10-$15.00 for shipping?

btw, the meter comes with ~ 20 TISAB tablets so you probably do not need to purchase anymore tablets unless you plan on testing a ton of water with it. I purchased the tablets @ $27.00 because I was unaware that some tablets came with the tester.

I guess I am not really willing to pay $270.00 to "verify" how good my RO system works.

This meter works as promised. The only thing I wish this meter had a backlit display.

The biggest hassle for me was getting the fluoride solution to calibrate the meter. I bought it from another website and it took 3 weeks to receive it after I placed my order. So check the lead time before you purchase the fluoride solution from a vendor. I see it's available on amazon, but I'd still check with the vendor about lead time.

The meter ships with a container of 25-50 reagent tablets, so you don't necessarily need to buy additional ones.

I found the user information in the box for calibrating the meter a little confusing. I went to the ExTech website and downloaded an updated manual and it was much clearer and easier to follow.

The first meter I received from Amazon was used and unusable. There was dried gunk all over the electrode. So I had to send it back and they sent me another one. I think this one may have been used/opened, too, but it was in much better condition.
