I am not an electrician but like and routinely use multimeters with automotive modifications and home remodeling projects around the house. First this is more meter than I require but when it comes to electricity, I dont want to skimp on a cheaper unit. I did a weeks worth of reviewing Fluke models, Klein, Greenlee, etc and decided this one was the best entry professional model for the money. I want to ensure I got a true RMS MM and teh Waterproof rating was a plus. What sold me on this was not only the features and price, but many reviews here and the YouTube video Extech has for the 500 series meters. It is a must see but lets just say these are rugged and accurate. I also wanted to ensure I bought one that covered the entire range for CAT III and entry CAT IV. It does all the conversions for DC for you and that was a must since I use it on authomotive as well.
It comes with a nice case, with storage room for a few other leads and will help protect it although probably unessary.
I can say, buy with confidence and I bet I will get years of use out of it. Oh, Also bought the Extech MA640 True RMS AC/DC 600A Clamp Meter with Non-Contact Voltage Detector the day after getting this one. If you want a GREAT Clamp meter that does a lot of what this one does without purchasing two MMs, I would recommend it. Probably overkill for me to have both but that is how I roll.

After reading a number of negative reviews about the EX505 I was prepared to be disappointed. The first thing I did was to remove the six screws holding the back on & examine the printed circuit board - very nice soldering, good component placement, etc. After attaching the back I took AC & DC volt measurements, DC amp measurements, ohms, frequency, etc. All read comparable to my Fluke 179.The only negative (compared to my $300 Fluke) is that the meter takes between two & four seconds to settle down to a voltage reading - the Fluke reads instantly.Two sets of test leads are included & both use 2000 volt insulated wire. Test lead ends are shrouded to prevent shock, just like Fluke. A similar test lead set from Fluke is $75 so the additional leads & tips are significant.The magnet hanger isn't as powerful as Fluke's but it holds the meter as long as the surface is flat & clean. The supplied black nylon strap doesn't fit really well so I replaced it with a 5/8" wide dog collar - much nicer fit & the meter hangs straight (see image)The non contact voltage tester works well & is very sensitive. There's a tiny LED flashlight built in but it's pretty weak.The case isn't anything special but it does provide storage for all components. Again this is an extra cost item from many manufacturers.All in all a solid value.
