Not the level of quality I expect from Extech
I like Extech so it pains me to give such a low rating to one of their multimeters. The MN10 is simply not up to the design or build standard that I expect from Extech. Indeed, this appears to be the same multimeter sold under the Craftsman brand (model #17387) which, at the time of writing this review, was being unloaded at SearsOutlet. This is a compact little unit that, from the outside, appears to be a smaller sibling to Extech’s standard line. Open it up, however, and you’ll find that you get what you pay for. Take a look at the photos I’ve uploaded and you’ll see soldering quality that looks about as bad as my own work. It really is just another cheap meter with uneven hand soldering.Even if you’ve contented yourself with the build quality, there isn’t much appealing about the design other than its size. It is manual ranging, an unnecessary pain when autoranging meters have become very inexpensive. Safety-wise, there isn’t a whole lot of overload protection, especially odd given that this is being marketed as useful for working on household line voltage. If you think the Cat II 300v rating is good enough for you, take another look at the photos I posted and note the little glass fuse. Spend the extra money for a unit that has Cat III 600v protection (especially if you are a DIY electrician). Extech has nice, inexpensive models. Finally, the unit requires a small 12v battery; would it have killed them to design the unit for any of the standard batteries that we all have lying around the house? As to the non-contact voltage detector, mine worked fine. However, if you’re working on your household wiring, get yourself one of the inexpensive, dedicated probes. They are dependable, compact enough to fit in a pocket (terribly useful when you’re up a ladder), they have both sound and light, and you can probe further into a box or bundle of wires than you can with the MN10.

My experience as Electrical Engineer with this metering equipment has had only goods. Its non-contact voltage detector, small size, superb quality, 0.5% basic accuracy and the snap on AC high current tester, conforms an excellent Multitester non surpassed for others in its class and price.
I have been using this device for months without complain. When you are in the electrical way you depends on safety and secure measurements and these are provided for the MN47, besides a very good price by Amazon.

This meter was shipped with at dead battery; fortunately the dead battery was high-quality and showed no sign of leakage. The battery compartment is difficult to open; after removing the screws you have to pry off the cover a little at a time from both ends. I bought it as a gift, so it is good that it comes with resealable packaging so that I could test it and replace the battery. Other than those minor problems, the meter works great and is an excellent value for this price. I gave it four stars instead of five, because shipping items with dead batteries could cause major problems with battery leakage. The seller should rotate his stock; he could also replace the batteries in older stock (since the package is easily resealable) in order to avoid potential problems with leaky batteries.

Used this for some basic electronics, nice little meter. Good size, works well in sunlight or darker rooms. Also got little clippy things that go on the probes so you can hook wires to the probes without trying to hold them on the probes yourself.

One of the main reasons that I purchased this one over others was for the non-contact voltage detection, but it flat out didn't work. It honestly worked more like a metal detector. I could flip a breaker for a certain set of outlets and confirmed that they were off with a plug, but this meter would consistently flash the "live" light when held close. But, even then it would not give confident readings; you have to move the meter allllll around the outlet while watching closely for this little light to flicker for just a split second. I returned it for a refund.
