Long story, short: I just plugged it in and it works! Have already installed on your computer: Windows 10, VLC Media Player, Windows Media Player.

Long story, long: I have an HP laptop, late 2016 model. It has Windows 10, VLC Media and Windows Media player on it. The instructions have such a tiny font, I had to use reading glasses and a magnifying glass! But I tossed that aside and just plugged it in.
I put in a CD. Windows said, "what would you like to do?" I chose play the CD. It did. Check.
I put in a blank CD. Windows said, "what would you like to do?" I chose burn a CD. Having picked songs and "Start burn" Windows said "Your drive doesn't support gapless burning. Would you like to turn off gapless burning and continue to burn the disc?" I said "Yes". It churned away for 5 to 7 minutes and popped out the burned CD. I popped in the burned CD and it played it OK. It does put a few seconds gap in between the songs, but that's what I wanted, so I didn't want gapless burning anyway. Guess that's more of a DJ thing. So, check!
I put in a DVD. It didn't ask me anything, but I navigated to the CD burner drive and double clicked on it and it brought up VLC Media player and started to play the DVD. Check!
Haven't tried burning a DVD. I did try to play a Blu-ray, but as described, this does not play Blu-ray DVDs.

Gone are the days where every computer needed a disk drive to run games, media, burn and write. Computers today almost no longer come with drives anymore since storage and internet has taken over. I occasionally like to run old DVD and cd games I have saved from years ago, and also needed a drive to record and burn images and videos. I took a chance and bought this during a lighting deal and I'm so impressed.

First, I was impressed with how light it is. It has a nice build quality feel to it. Has a smooth metal finish. It connects via USB and uses 3.0 for faster speeds. Running Windows 10 on my newly built computer, it detected it immediately. Within 10 seconds I was already watching a DVD movie and also playing old PC games. When done, I simply unplug, tuck the USB wire into a slot that tucks it away, and save it for later use. For the price, I highly recommend this!

I purchased this device for my music and video production laptop and I'm happy with my purchase. It maxes out at 8x write speed, which is fine for me because I prefer slower write speeds to avoid errors. It's highly portable and lightweight, and one feature I really like is that the USB cord is integrated into the device, so no more searching for the right USB cord when I want to use it. I will say that upon first use my burning software wouldn't recognize the device, and the directions make a mention of formatting but are still pretty vague. To fix this, I installed software for reading/playing DVDs (I like VLC) and attempted to play a DVD in the external drive. Once that was successful, my burning software read the device and burned DVDs without any issues. That is the reason for the 4 stars for easy to use, as I feel the directions could be more detailed in this matter. Other than that, it delivers what it promises and I'm happy with it.

USB powered and since I needed something on the side without using a darn sata cable, I'm happy. The usb cord is very short. unless you have usb ports on top of your computer, you'll need an extension. Mine is on the side of the computer, so all I have to do is set this puppy on top and plug it in on the side. Perfect. I needed this to make a system repair disk and it was pnp. All done, now I'll watch a video thank you very much. Bet it gets hot as all get out, go figure. Probably burn itself up watching a dvd video, no air circulation. I bought it cuz I don't want a single sata cable in my computer whatsoever. Sometimes you just have to have a dvd/cd player. Might as well have it on the side as needed. I also make repair media on usb, but who knows what will happen to that tiny thing in the weeks and months to come. Back up!......always a back up to the back up. Don't forget that. Redundancy is your friend in computer back up.

You have to CHANGE THE REGION on the reader to make it work.. It's region 1 (one). I've tried many things before that and it never worked. After changing the region it all went well.
You're gonna find the region number in the "Properties" of the hardware in your Parameters.. It's a right click on the hardware..

First off: WHAT ROCKET SCIENTIST came up with the HARD WIRED CABLE that is on this thing??? It's bound to be a problem and then you can't even replace it! It's also only about a foot long, if that! So you are EXTREMELY limited as to where and how you set the DVD up. Secondly, it will NOT WORK if you do not attach it to your system DIRECTLY! That means NO HUB use at all. I have a very good POWERED usb 3.1 hub and it does not even recognize it. Third and most important, although it does run fairly quiet, it gets warm and freezes! PASS on this one.....going back!
