Whilst scanning Amazon for a USB CD/DVD writer, I spotted this ASUS unit -a well established and highly reputable brand- and the price and review ratings were good, so I bought it. Upon receiving the drive and copying some files off a CD to a solid state hard drive (SSD) it seemed the drive was a bit pokey on the transfer rate. So I ordered two other USB writers from Amazon; a Samsung unit and an Amazon Basics unit. After timing the transfer rate on all three drives, as well as measuring the transfer rate on my four year old HP DV6 laptop for reference, I realized that the ASUS was not so pokey after all... but I also stumbled on the fact the Samsung unit was three times faster than any of the other drives, including my laptop! All told I think the Samsung is a better deal. Here is a mini-review:

I recently received a ASUS Windows 8 touch screen laptop that does not include a DVD drive. I did a lot of research to find a portable DVD drive that would work with Windows 8 - the ASUS External Slim Optical Drive works great with Windows 8.
I was able to easily plug in the two USB connections (one for data, and one for power) from the DVD drive and insert the disc to load it onto my computer, but once I loaded a DVD movie into the drive nothing would happen. I found out that Windows 8 does not come with a program to play DVD's so I had to install one from the internet first. I chose Power DVD, and now I am able to play DVD's on my laptop.
The DVD drive is a nice small size, and the diamond cut design looks very stylish. I love it!

I purchased this to assist with installing software on an ultrabook. It's extremely simple it use. You only need to plug in one of the two USB connectors if you are using USB 2.0 or above, which should be standard on most computers made after 2004. The drive uses a mini-USB to USB cable, so if you don't like the dual connectors, you can replace it with a similar cable. The drive fits nicely under my Asus monitor. The drive was recognized immediately by Windows 7 and Windows 8 RC, as well as by the system BIOS for booting from a disc. The drive does come with DVD playback software, but I recommend using VLC Media Player if you want to use this to watch DVDs. Many of the negative reviews seem to come from people who do not understand how to use this for DVD playback.
I bought this drive because it was the cheapest, and any similar ASUS drive would do the same things. I wish it had a vertical stand to take up less space on my desk, but this is a minor concern. It does everything I want it to do.

NO OPTICAL DRIVE ON MAC MINI 2012 MODEL: I recently purchased a Mac Mini 2012 model. This is the first Apple Mac Mini that is manufactured without a built-in optical drive. (Call me old fashioned, but I'm really dependent on optical drives!)

This ASUS unit was the perfect solution for me. It is reasonably priced, presents a good appearance, and is easy to install -- just "plug and play."

ABOUT THE USB CABLE: Included with this unit is a USB Y cable, with two standard USB 2.0 male plugs -- one on the end of a thick wire, and one on the end of a thin wire -- designed to be plugged into two USB ports on a computer. The third male end attaches to the ASUS.

On the Y cable, the thick wire seems designed to carry both data and power. The thin wire seems to carry power only (no data). I have found that this ASUS unit successfully operates with only the thicker wire attached directly to one of the computer's USB ports -- NOT to an external USB hub; it pulls too much juice. I can plug in the thin wire if I need to, otherwise I simply let it "dangle."

All and all, this ASUS unit is a cost-effective solution to provide an external optical drive to any computer lacking one.

This ASUS USB DVD external optical drive performs like those of the internal DVD drives like the Asus 24xDVD-RW Serial ATA Internal OEM Drive DRW-24B1ST (Black). It is also very quiet, performs quickly, has a stylish design, and is slim.

The Good
* Quiet
* Slim
* Very cool checkered pattern
* Stylish black glossy shiny finish
* Performs like those of internal DVD drives in terms of speed and power
* My Windows 7 64 bit system read it immediately

The not so good, but is tolerable
- As I had mentioned, the opening is the same as laptop drives, in which it springs out and requires you to pull out the whole tray. No big deal. If the tray opened automatically, it would compromise the slim build of the drive

Overall, this drive is as close as it gets to an internal DVD drive/writer. The convenience, performance, and reliability is top notch.
