Format: Audio CD
This is Threshold's third album in a new, remastered edition, with additional tracks. The lead vocalist on this CD is Damian Wilson, who sang on the 1993 debut, Wounded Land, and recently returned to the band for their 2012 release March of Progress. Threshold is a progressive metal group from the United Kingdom with a very distinctive style. Heavy rhythm guitars and keyboard backgrounds create a dense wall of sound. The vocals are in the upper range. The musical ideas are often complex, but there are some good melodic themes. The lyrics are always thoughtful. The songwriting here is more experimental, and hence less consistent than on Threshold's other CDs. A couple of tracks are arguably too innovative. Still, for the most part, this CD is nicely done, and interesting to listen to.

Extinct Instinct - Definitive Edition
1997/2012 Nuclear Blast

Heralded as the most "progressive" of the Threshold releases, this album was remastered in 2004 as part of Inside Out's Special Edition series with the "picture frame" cover sleeve and 3 bonus tracks - "Mansion" and the radio edits of "Exposed" and "Virtual Isolation." The new version (with full art cover sleeve) contains the "Virtual Isolation" radio edit, "Mansion" and "Smile at the Moon" which is the new song that was recorded for the 2009 Paradox - The Singles Collection box set with Wilson on vocals. The radio of "Exposed" was left off the new release. Additionally, the liner notes have been altered to include a blurb for the new song "Smile at the Moon" in the producer's notes and the additional track information for the new song on the last page. Also, this is the first CD in the Definitive Edition series where Nuclear Blast has been added to the list of thanks/credits.

(review of 2004 Limited Edition version)

After the departure of Glynn Morgan on vocals, Damian Wilson stepped in once again and lent his vocal talents on this, the most progressive recording this band has released to date. Karl Groom and company went back to the drawing board and although they returned to the more progressive keyboard based 70's sound of Wounded Land, the guitars still retain some of that bone crunching sound that was perfected on Psychedelicatessen. Hence, this album really sounds like an amalgam of those two styles. Where the fans of Wounded Land and the prog metal "purists" may have had a hard time with the bands last release, here they would be rewarded with more atonal, less commercial yet colorful and lush sounds.
