So unfortunately, although it was too late to get my money back, I gave it up and deleted it.
Initially, I was intrigued by the book winning the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2017. The first few pages seemed to justify this award based on the style and pacing of character development.
Then I was cast adrift in a stream of consciousness that carried a chair along with it. There moments of intense emotional reaction on my before the feelings dissolved into air, and I was back in the same stream.
I almost gave up before reaching Carolyn's story. This was the true anchor of the whole novel. If the story had been told from her point of view, I feel this book would have been a far stronger novel for me and would have carried me through to the finish.
I think the author's choice of Fred as the main narrator was a serious flaw in the structure of this novel. The stylist characterisation of Fred was interesting at first but soon became repetitive and less interesting.
