As always, Gordon West presents the exam material in a fun manner that makes learning much more enjoyable. I've used his books along with online practtice exams to obtain my Tech and General class tickets. I was able to ace the General class exam (didn't miss any) without any trouble.

Use Gordo's advice presented in his books along with online practice exams and you'll have no problem at all passing the real exams.

The book is well organized and does a good job covering many aspects needed for an understanding of the material and not just the answers; however, some topics were not covered leaving the reader to use other references to understand the subject matter. In comparison, the ARRL Extra Class study manual goes real deep on many, if not all, subject matter; becoming somewhat less of a study guide and taking more time to navigate the questions. I'm satisfied with this book and would buy it again if I had to do it over again. I can appreciate the ARRL book, it is definitely more detailed. I'd say that between the two books the decision is based on how long you want to take to study for your Extra Class exam. For the "one month or less" study guide/review approach, this book (Gordon West) is perfect.

I've used the Gordon West prep books and audio cds to pass my Technician, General and just yesterday my Extra class license exam. The organization of the material, a little in depth description as well as the tricks to help remember some of the answers allowed me to pass all tests with flying colors!

If you're having trouble comprehending any of the material, want additional reinforcement as you go through the book, or learn better hearing vs reading, I'd suggest also purchasing the audio CDs. The audio CDs follow the exact structure of the book. I listened to them many times as I commuted to work and you become very familiar with the questions and answers to the point where you hear the question, you can say the answer. The audio CDs also offer additional hints on remembering some of the answers and verbal explanations on solving the math problems in the Extra exam. "Gordo" is very enthusiastic on the audio tapes and makes learning the material pretty painless.

It's nice to walk into the exam sessions feeling confident that you know the material and will have no problem passing the test.

73 and see you on the air,
K2DSL - David

First off: The question pool for this book expired at the end of June 2012! I'm sure an updated version is either out or coming out...buy that one and not this one! I got the book shortly before the question pool expired. I had already begun to study a bit...until my fellow Amateur Radio Club members told me to get this book instead. I studied, studied, studied...and was able to pass the Extra exam in about 3 weeks. Now, to be fair, this book is about passing the exam. It *will* teach you a lot of the information...but clearly the focus is to pass the exam. For my tech and general licenses I learned everything. For this, I learned a lot of it, but there were parts that I would probably never use so I did use the guide to get me past those parts. What I discovered was that along the way, I learned far more than I expected!

I highly recommend this series of books (assuming the other licensing books are like this one...I've never used the Gordon West books until now). Just be sure to get the updated version for the new question pool (that began July 1, 2012).

Excellent presentation of materials and tips. All books and CD's mentioned in my review have been purchased at Amazon.com either new or used. This is what you need in order to pass the exam. It also helps that Mr. West gives you information on what these questions mean so you can understand some of what you're being tested on. My recommendation is to get the book and get the 6 disk CD program of the same title that he also has available. I used the 2008-2012 versions but he has the 2012-2016 also available which becomes effective on 7/1/2012. You can use this book even after the new exams come out but you'll have questions that will no longer be on the exams and not knowing about 75 new questions that will be on the new exams. Since the books are structured to make sure you know the actual questions and answers that will be on the test you can see how that will effect which books you should be studying. Together they make a great team of materials for you to learn by. I read through the book and all the questions and answers before I took any practice exams which allowed me to get his tips and explanations of how to answer the questions. If you're not good at math; I don't even know what most of the math terms are let alone know how to use them, then he has excellent tips on getting around those problems. After reading and reviewing all the material he has then I took the practice exams until I got into the mid to high 80's. Then I went to a VEC site to take my exam and passed first time with 94%. 2012-2016 Extra Class book + software package

When it comes to test prep books for HAM radio, the Gordon West book is the only one to use. He explains the answers and provides clear instruction so that even rank amateurs can pass the exams. He also has produced a set of CD's that can be used while driving, or as an accomapaniment while going through the book. I knew nothing of radio theory and passed the first time
