Rating: 4 stars out of 5
This review is based on the Audiobook version of Extrasensual Perception by Rayna Vause and Narrated by John Solo. This is the 26th book in the Dreamspun Desires collection. It is a fun paranormal story featuring Christopher Vincent, a psychic and Jack Whittman, the confident, sexy co-owner of the new club that Chris has been hired to do the psychic readings for. Chris is good friends with Jack’s sister, Angelica and has had a crush on Jack since they shared a kiss long ago. After Chris’s mother sent him to warn Angelica of a threat involving water Angelica hires him to be the psychic reader at the new club Carnival W. Jack doesn’t want the liability that having a psychic reader at the club. He doesn’t believe that anyone can read the future. When someone starts stalking Angelica, Jack and Chris begin to work together to protect Angelica and find out who is behind all of the strange happenings. The more that they work together the harder it is for them to fight the growing feelings they have for each other and Jack begins to realize that there may be something to Chris’s psychic abilities. The chemistry between Jack and Chris grew as the book progressed. The pacing, for the most part, was light and fun, but the stalker added an interesting slant to this romance. I enjoyed the ending and I must say that I love Chris’s mom. We are offered a fair amount of character development, but if the story was a little longer I would have enjoyed reading more about the individual characters. I think the best part of this story was the narration. I have listened to other works read by John Solo and feel that he really gets the characters that he is portraying.

I am STUNNED at how much I liked this book – it came out of left field! 😉 When we meet Christoper, he is taking care of his mom and trying to avoid to become her messenger. She has psychic powers and wants her son to relay a message to someone in particular. While Christopher does everything in his power to avoid running the “errand,” he finally gives in and his luck seems to turn. He sees his crush from afar, for five years they’ve been avoiding each other, and he tries really hard to stay on track with his mission.
Only, life has other plans. His luck turns around and he’s offered a job using his own unique gifts, which brings him back into contact with the dreamboat that is Jack. Talk about chemistry from the beginning! These two were definitely made for each other – and while they fight it, they simply can’t let the other one go.
While they’re busy reconnecting, they are also being stalked and in dangerous water with someone who has a real vendetta against Jack. The danger, the thrill, the (small) angst – came together perfectly and ended up being a one-sitting read! This is a great read for anyone who loves a man on the loose hunt – don’t worry too much about the unique gifts, it plays well with the story and doesn’t go down the “woo-woo” path. Instead, it’s a great anchor for Jack and Christopher to find their way back together.
Naturally, the boss doesn’t really believe in psychics and takes some convincing before he does. That’s not to say he doesn’t like the psychic himself though.
When Chris goes to see his friend Angelina to deliver a cryptic message from Chris’s mother, a known psychic, he’s surprised when he’s offered a job at her new nightclub. His mom is a well-known psychic, but she’s disabled, and no one was supposed to know he could also see the future. When Angelina finds out, she quickly hires him as the perfect addition to her new nightclub, named Carnival.
In the meantime, her skeptical brother, Jack, spends a lot of time eyeing up the psychic. And why not? He’s beautiful eye candy. It’s not until he finds out that Chris has been right all along that he takes his psychic ability more seriously, and by then both Chris and Angelina have been endangered.
A sweet love story, with a man for Angelina, and Jack for Chris, this hits both sides of the romance coin. Rayna Vause is a new author to me, and I liked this story—I do love these sappy stories—and both the plot and the writing were good. Just long enough with just enough mystery and action to make it interesting. Add in John Solo’s very good narration, and I had a hard time putting it down long enough to communicate with my family. (They might not have been happy, but I was!) A super way to spend the day walking, taking a car ride, or simply lying on the beach, I recommend this audiobook to lovers of these sweet old-time romances.
