Rating: 4 stars out of 5
This review is based on the Audiobook version of Extrasensual Perception by Rayna Vause and Narrated by John Solo. This is the 26th book in the Dreamspun Desires collection. It is a fun paranormal story featuring Christopher Vincent, a psychic and Jack Whittman, the confident, sexy co-owner of the new club that Chris has been hired to do the psychic readings for. Chris is good friends with Jack’s sister, Angelica and has had a crush on Jack since they shared a kiss long ago. After Chris’s mother sent him to warn Angelica of a threat involving water Angelica hires him to be the psychic reader at the new club Carnival W. Jack doesn’t want the liability that having a psychic reader at the club. He doesn’t believe that anyone can read the future. When someone starts stalking Angelica, Jack and Chris begin to work together to protect Angelica and find out who is behind all of the strange happenings. The more that they work together the harder it is for them to fight the growing feelings they have for each other and Jack begins to realize that there may be something to Chris’s psychic abilities. The chemistry between Jack and Chris grew as the book progressed. The pacing, for the most part, was light and fun, but the stalker added an interesting slant to this romance. I enjoyed the ending and I must say that I love Chris’s mom. We are offered a fair amount of character development, but if the story was a little longer I would have enjoyed reading more about the individual characters. I think the best part of this story was the narration. I have listened to other works read by John Solo and feel that he really gets the characters that he is portraying.

I am STUNNED at how much I liked this book – it came out of left field! 😉 When we meet Christoper, he is taking care of his mom and trying to avoid to become her messenger. She has psychic powers and wants her son to relay a message to someone in particular. While Christopher does everything in his power to avoid running the “errand,” he finally gives in and his luck seems to turn. He sees his crush from afar, for five years they’ve been avoiding each other, and he tries really hard to stay on track with his mission.
Only, life has other plans. His luck turns around and he’s offered a job using his own unique gifts, which brings him back into contact with the dreamboat that is Jack. Talk about chemistry from the beginning! These two were definitely made for each other – and while they fight it, they simply can’t let the other one go.
While they’re busy reconnecting, they are also being stalked and in dangerous water with someone who has a real vendetta against Jack. The danger, the thrill, the (small) angst – came together perfectly and ended up being a one-sitting read! This is a great read for anyone who loves a man on the loose hunt – don’t worry too much about the unique gifts, it plays well with the story and doesn’t go down the “woo-woo” path. Instead, it’s a great anchor for Jack and Christopher to find their way back together.
Both the main and secondary characters were interesting and likable. Jack and Chris had distinct personalities and the reader gets a brief, but decent background on them and their families. There wasn’t a lot of growth in this book, and though that that fit with the generally lighter feel in the book, it kept me from getting swept away by their story. I did like the way the romance steadily grew between Chris and Jack. There wasn’t instalove and it followed a fairly natural progression that resulting in some nice heat. I also found Jack’s skepticism about Chris’s abilities provided an interesting conflict that created some tension between the two and offered some depth and growth opportunities for the characters. The writing and dialogue reinforced the tone of Extrasensual Perception- steady, solid, and casual. The conflicts kept me engaged with satisfying and well developed resolutions. I think this had the bones to be a really intriguing story if it was longer and there was time for more depth and development to the characters and relationships. However, it also didn’t feel half-baked, so I wasn’t left bored or frustrated either. The narrator was new to me but he worked well with the book, keeping an even keeled rhythm with good diction. In a word, I’d characterize the book and performance as low-key.
While I was listening to this audiobook, I was reading a book that wore out my emotions so this proved to be a great counterbalance and palate cleanser. Overall, this was an enjoyable easy listen with just enough action and mystery to keep things interesting. If you’re in need of a break from heavy angst, I think this would be a good fit.
