In this sequel to the classic bestseller Perspective! For the Comic Book Artist, David Chelsea takes perspective to a whole other level—by exploring the most dramatic viewpoints employed by today’s artists. Many of these techniques have been carefully guarded secrets for centuries. But David, and his hollow-headed friend, Mugg, make them accessible to a new generation of artists, cartoonists, illustrators, and animators. In Extreme Perspective! For Artists, you’ll learn how to

•         Render complicated multi-sided objects in perfect perspective
•         Create accurate shadows and reflections from your own imagination
•         Master the most difficult kinds of curvilinear perspective systems
•         Draw eye-popping images in fisheye perspective
•         Use your computer to create elaborate scenes quicker and more easily
•         … And much, much more!

Also included is a comprehensive library of perspective grids on DVD, suitable for printing or using with Photoshop and other applications.

David Chelsea was born in Portland Oregon. A published commercial artist since the age of twelve, David has drawn comics and illustrations for numerous publications and is the author of the graphic novels David Chelsea In Love, Welcome To The Zone, Snow Angel, and the how-to books Perspective! For Comic Book Artists, Extreme Perspective! For Artists, and Perspective In Action. In recent years David has taken up the challenge devised by Scott McCloud, to draw an entire 24 page comic within 24 hours, a record seventeen times, and the first 12 of these stories have been collected in two volumes by Dark Horse, Everybody Gets It Wrong! and Sleepless. David's 16th 24 Hour Comic session is the subject of the documentary 24 Hour Comic, directed by Milan Erceg.

David's work on perspective stems from a lifelong interest. He has lectured on the subject at numerous institutions including The University Of Oregon, Pacific Northwest College of Art and Seattles's Gage Academy Of Art. Years ago, David devised his own six point perspective method for painting on spherical objects such as globes and bowling balls, and his spherical paintings are in many private collections.

David lives in Portland's historic Irvington's district with his wife Eve and daughter Rebecca.

For the longest time I've struggled with perspective. Mostly the issue is that I understood it intellectually but my drawing hand couldn't 'get it'. And the biggest stumbling block, as a cartoonist - is this : in real life things simply are almost NEVER lined up in perfect parallel lines! So if I draw the desk in perspective, how do I draw the book that is on the desk in perspective when it's not parallel? - and how do I draw the person sitting at the desk in a chair that's a wee bit to the side - both the book and the chair CANNOT use the vanishing point of the desk itself - what do I do?

And it is this question almost every introduction to perspective fails to address. I'd try! And I'd get it so wrong - I'd just freehand everything and while it was off, it looked BETTER!

Really, this is the ONLY book to answer that question - how to draw desk, book and chair all at different angles, all in perfect perspective with appropriate vanishing points!

The book covers a lot more, but that one thing I feel is worth the price of admission.

The two books by David Chelsea, the first being 'Perspective for Artists', and the second being this book, Extreme Perspective for Artists - are the BEST books I have ever read on the subject. And because it is done as a graphic novel - it teaches better than any other book on perspective, teaches in a way you can SEE and not just understand intellectually!

The only caveat I have regarding this book is that it covers what you can do with Smith Micro's Manga Studio Pro digital perspective drawing tools, and this book may make you covet that modestly priced (for what it does) software badly (I went and bought it, and yes, it delivers! and is also a better drawing program than photoshop for comics (which is saying a LOT!)

    Introduction:
If you already have to technical background in perspectives, this will help you make them better.

    The Good:
Very thorough job of explaining perspectives, but not for the faint of heart, because it will challenge you even with its simplified.

    The bad:
I wish the art was a little more appealing to look at.the drawings are basic of basics. You get information throught a comic strip like narration. Almost like reading along a picture book.

    Verdict:
YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IF INFORMATION IS WHAT YOU SEEK.
If Inspiration is what you are after however, this is not the most visually appealing, but still a strong addition to any artists library. a 4/5

This book enlightened me to various ways of looking at things, thus another perspective. I am most interested in creating art in the 360/VR realm and this book gave me greater understanding seeing that there is not much info out there on this particular new medium. I highly recommend it.

I found this book a little hard to understand in that I was looking for more simplified explanations...many of his articles are far less technical and enjoyable. However, as perspective books go this is really the bomb, in a good way people. It is a good book and reference to have especially for stepping out of the perspective box.

I ordered this a long time ago and did not realise the cd with the perspective grids included was broken. It was past the return period, so I wrote amazon, no help, I wrote the author directly and asked if I could even purchase the cd or downloads of the grids separately. Crickets. I trued the kindle, none of the grids seem to be included with the kindle edition and the price of the book with the cd is too high for me to afford. Kinda ticked, so not warm and fuzzy about this experience.
The content of the book is wonderful if only I could have the actual grids to use.

Jammed packed fulla tips and tricks and has some free downloadable scaled grids in the dvd that came with my book, which was in not great contition [but that is the way I ordered it for the cheap price I paid for the book].
