5.0 out of 5 stars Survive any unplanned outdoors situation, presented without the normal machismo and arrogance. Great read.
By PeterV on March 28, 2017
I have 5 or 6 other "survival" books, and this is not your typical over-hyped "survival" book. There is no arrogance, no machismo. The author writes simply, directly, and in a way that makes understanding and application simple. The writing style evokes a solid confidence in the experience of the writer, and after doing a bit of research on the author, Craig Caudill, he's the real deal. A lifetime of real world survival experience conjoined with years of instruction and hands-on training provide him a solid experiential base to provide his instruction from.

The book opens with survival mindset, absolutely the most critical element to successful survival, but one that is depreciated in other sources under the tools of the trade, so to speak. The focus on correct mindset and thought patterns in an emergency situation is something that more survival instructors need to teach, as it is a significant factor in survivability, and, when all else is equal, quality of life in a survival situation.

The book also addresses survival with firearms, patrol techniques, group survival considerations, tracking and other critical elements that would be invaluable in a survival situation that spans more than a few days in the woods, and the section on tactics is, again, another topic rarely addressed but invaluable in more dire circumstances.

All in all, this was a thoroughly engaging read with easy-to-implement principles mixed in with real-world experiential advice that kept me engaged until the end. This is a book that will remain a go-to resource in my library and re-read periodically to keep my mindset and survival game sharpened and ready for whatever life throws at me.
