Extremely Loud: Sound as a Weapon Hardcover – Illustrated, June 4, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
In this troubling and wide-ranging account, acclaimed journalist Juliette Volcler looks at the long history of efforts by military and police forces to deploy sound against enemies, criminals, and law-abiding citizens. During the 2004 battle over the Iraqi city of Fallujah, US Marines bolted large speakers to the roofs of their Humvees, blasting AC/DC, Eminem, and Metallica songs through the city’s narrow streets as part of a targeted psychological operation against militants that has now become standard practice in American military operations in Afghanistan. In the historic center of Brussels, nausea-inducing sound waves are unleashed to prevent teenagers from lingering after hours. High-decibel, “nonlethal” sonic weapons have become the tools of choice for crowd control at major political demonstrations from Gaza to Wall Street and as a form of torture at Guantanamo and elsewhere.
In an insidious merger of music, technology, and political repression, loud sound has emerged in the last decade as an unlikely mechanism for intimidating individuals as well as controlling large groups. “Thorough and well researched,” Extremely Loud documents and interrogates this little-known modern phenomenon, exposing it as a sinister threat to the peace and quiet that societies have traditionally craved (Publishers Weekly).
“Extremely Loud makes you shiver, or cover your ears, at the technological buildup now at the service of the most sophisticated forms of repression.” ―Libération

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024Useful and well-written on a largely ignored topic. I do not think it is anti-american. It happens that Americans use it...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2014It doesn't cover any fresh theoretical or analytical ground, but this book provides a good historical summary of the weaponization of sound in the 20th and early 21st centuries. Although scholarly, the writing has energy and mostly avoids humanities-style impenetrability. Careful citations and good footnotes point the interested reader toward more thorough studies. While I haven't read the original French, I don't imagine that much was lost on the way over to English. Pretty good!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2014I like very much the sources of information on the subject!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2016Great food for thought.... Really HITS HOME. Could definitely see the Barney theme "I Love You" being used in conjunction with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" as part of some guilt driven psy-war campaign. Call NSA, dgaf.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2015This is an interesting topic. The book begins well, but it seems to me that it turns into largely an anti-American tirade, albeit well documented. God knows we are not perfect, and I'm American for better or worse, but I see some bias here that detracts from the topic.
I would also day that the book is not so much about sound as a weapon, as it is about things like riot control--more likely used against dissident citizens than in combat situations. The information is solid, and the sources seem credible. I cannot recommend this book other than that. Three stars for information and important topic, two stars for writing.
