- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2001I saw the premiere of this here in New York and thought it was a fantastic piece. The recording gave me a chance to revisit it.
Eyerly displays a great sense of music and drama finding clever ways to make Hawthorne's characters come alive. The piece is funny, dramatic, and sometimes a little scary. All of this is brilliantly encompassed in the music and libretto, which Eyerly wrote himself.
The recording is live, and not without some flaws. But it is surprisingly well miked and the student cast is astonishingly strong. I wish I could say the same for the orchestra, but they do fine and the recording is well worth having. I can't wait to hear his next opera!
