There is no doubt that Petterson is a superb story teller and knows how to hook the reader in a way that he can't put it down.
But, there is a problem with this last book. for one, it's too long. I can sincerely say that only in the second half it really caught my interest. The first part only ennerved me.
Ricardo Peralta is described in a way so lacking colors, only black, that wasn't reliable. The same about Teresa, only she is painted as a martyr without any blame to her. In real life there are more colors.
Of course I found myself, like all readers, hating the guy and waiting for him to finally do a favor to humanity by getting killed. From this moment the book improved a lot. The trial was one of the best I have read, including the Grisham books.
I think that RNP deals with the terrible subject of child sexual abuse in a very superficial way, without getting to the core of it. Very disappointing, I had a feeling that he only decided as an aferthought to include the issue. Chris Page is , in my opinion, with is mistakes the most human of all the characters.
I am not convinced that the political aspect that was included did the book a good service.
Apart from all my critics, I continue loving RNP books and will buy the next. He is a wonderful WRITER!!!!!!!
A real winner!!
