Peter is imprisoned and his younger brother Thomas ascends to the throne. The Eyes of the Dragon starts out slowly, but, as in most of King's books, the pace speeds up steadily, building to an exciting and satisfying climax. I really enjoyed this book. I'm reading this as part of The Dark Tower's extended reading list, and I can certainly see what purpose there was in reading this. I'd probably give this book to a younger teenager, as it touches on some violence but its a relatively tame and simple story of good and evil.

This is a minor novel by Stephen King. It's a fantasy novel set loosely in the Dark Tower world. Flagg (yes him!!) is a court magician and is very evil. He plots against the King and has him killed. He imprisons the King's son Peter, his deadly rival, in a high tower and makes the other King's son, easily led and weak Thomas, as new king. The core of the story is how Peter manages to overcome Flagg in a battle of wits, with help from his friends. The prose style is in the vein of a traditional folk story, unlike King's usual prose style, so it reads differently from his other novels. Is this a bad thing, no it isn't. Once you get used to it, the novel reads well and you get caught up in the story. If you are interested in King's canon of work, especially the Dark Tower world, then this is an interesting addition. If you are just interested in reading a good fantasy yarn then you will enjoy this story.

Bought this second hand but would have been disappointed if I had paid full price. I appreciate that it is aimed primarily at a younger audience but the (admittedly tame)sexual references at the beginning upset the balance of an otherwise acceptable fairy tale. I am no prude but I felt that it wasn't necessary and not appropriate for my two 10 year old daughters who have wanted to read a SK book having seen my collection of his work. Better to read the Inkspell Trilogy or Septimus Heap!

It's different from his other books but that doesn't mean it's not as good. I loved the story. I loved the "clues", the way King linked every tiny bit of information and in the end it all made sense. It's not a story for kids, trust me. This is for adults not because of sexual content but because of the way it explores the most ugly human emotions: jealousy, greed, fear... Fear mixed with ignorance is a nasty thing.
