In my own personal opinion, I thought this movie was too grim, gross and depressing to be entertaining. It's characters with mental illness hurting one another throughout. There were beautiful, poetic parts to it, and the tragic story was well made, beautifully photographed and you can see a lot of care and money went into it. BUT for me, the sadness and grossness of the story was just too much for me.
I like horror movies that are entertaining. This wasn't entertainment this was simply 'Let's see how uncomfortable and icky we can make the viewer feel,' along the lines of Human Centipede, which I really disliked immensely. Don't take my word for it, I believe never listen to people's opinions about movies. Formulate your own, but don't expect a feelgood experience. If you like feeling icky this one's for you!

Editorial Reviews
In their secluded farmhouse, a mother, formerly a surgeon, teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. But after a shocking event shatters their idyllic life, the young girl must cope with the nightmarish repercussions that echo into adulthood. As she matures, it becomes clear that this beautiful but dangerous young woman has some very peculiar desires.

A must see for horror movie lovers that long for a throwback old school slow churner
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2017Verified Purchase
I waited years for this movie to come out and after I read the brief description way before it was released I knew I had to see it. A young girl at a very early age loses her mother after being viciously killed, her father slowly loses the will to live and slowly dies a lonely death. The young girl now a grown woman only knows what it is like to be alone and does everything in her power to keep those around her close..even if it kills her.
This movie is twisted and spooky and at the same time calls for some sadness. The main character loses her mother in a vicious way and has to grow up very quickly missing out on so many things. Without spoiling anything I will say that I had to google many parts of this movie as sometimes it was hard to keep up on just what was happening and I am glad I did. It was so well done.. and it was what you did not see that was horrifying.
The black and white tone was just perfect along with the music and the camera work. This is an old school horror thriller done so extremely well. A must see

I kept thinking throughout the movie how it might be pretty unremarkable if it had been done in color
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2017Verified Purchase
This is a hard one to sum up. I can see what a lot of the reviewers have said about it relying on the black and white to set it apart. I kept thinking throughout the movie how it might be pretty unremarkable if it had been done in color. But it wasn't. It's very stark and sharp and the B&W cinematography adds a whole dimension to the film. In the end, if the movie seemed good because of the way it looked more than the story or the horror elements, so what? It WAS good, if it used B&W as a crutch, I don't really care because it manages to set itself apart.
But it's not like the story and the horror aren't both there. There were some moments that really made me squirm and with the very short running time, it held a good pace. I don't think it's all that some people are talking it up to be, but I can't really get behind the idea that it's a crappy flick that only seems cool because of the way it was shot. Not bad. I've spent more money on worse ways to kill 90 minutes.

This is a remarkable debut for director Nicolas Pesce, one that reveals a strong personal vision. The film is both extremely disturbing and beautifully composed - the stark black and white photography etches the unforgettable images into the psyche. Some of the most harrowing events are ones that aren't even shown on the screen, but they are, nevertheless, planted deep in the imagination, where they won't soon be forgotten. The film is steeped in atmosphere and poetic dread, and although this is definitely a work of psychological horror, where gruesome and unspeakable acts are performed, it's far removed from torture porn - it manages to inspire empathy for its damaged and deranged heroine, communicating her extreme isolation. And, amazingly, this is all wrapped within a beautiful and haunting aesthetic. I watched the film a second time and my appreciation only grew.

This film works significantly better as a drama than any kind of horror. Yes, the main character is deranged but she is otherwise banal - I just don't see the active hand of malice in her work. She is simply pitiable. I do appreciate the beautiful setting and cinematography so kudos for that. I suppose you can say I just don't see what the fuss is about...

It's weird. I was recommended this movie, and while it's full of death and plot and things are OBVIOUSLY happening through the whole thing, I felt like it kind of dragged a little. That could just be me. I liked it, though. It's an interesting concept.

Disturbing and beautiful, but not much here in terms of substance. I enjoyed this film, but don't know how quick I would be to recommend it to more traditional horror fans.

This movie is smart. I saw no mistakes. The child actor and adult actor both played Francesca consistently. There was some gore in the movie, but no jump scares. Francesca moves slowly and fluidly, so her actions do not seem frightening. To her, they are not. In the end, I felt sorry for Francesca.

Don’t Look At The Eyes..

First I’m going to give this five stars, why I don’t know.
Second if for some reason you have a weak stomach please do not watch, the bad stuff is mostly of camera.
but in your mind if you can’t figure it out to know what’s happing you shouldn’t be a watcher of movies.
this is a very desperate an deprave victim of unfortunate circumstance of loneliness an isolation.
the mind don’t only play with this victim it makes her the enemy of us,
because what you see is not what you think is your best friend but your worst enemy.
like I said before its very chilling an disturbing movie that’s slightly boarding on child endangerment to the extreme.
but thank goodness its running time is limited to one hour an sixteen minutes..
the first ten or twenty minutes is slow but when the real crime approach look out..
I don’t know how or if I should say I love it or loth it. but I will not say I don’t like, because the things that people do..
never astound me,
Writer director Nicolas Pesce’s (I should say a young Pesce’s) debut movie is an unnerving account of how loneliness
is the worst case scenario. Kika Magalhaes as (Francisca) was so outstanding and so real its Scary.
