I found nothing new in this book, I found nothing dramatic about an event in one's life that surely must be more profound than any other. The book was boring, boring, boring!
Now his music. I bought and downloaded 2 of his albums from Amazon. I thought they wer good but certainly not meeting the quality of Catholic liturgical music. But it is soothing.
Also, this is a guy who lives not like a starving artist/muscician apparently. He mentions how one particular Greek islad was his favorite on his many trips to Greece. He is also quite fond of the Netherlands and has been a frequent visitor. He also seemed quite smitten with California.
And in the midst of all this are the peripatetic lessons given him through these travels. It seems maybe he was a bit "advantaged" to travel so extensively without a continuous job that would have provided the wherewithall to do this.
I was very underwhelmed and would not recommend it to anyone. It hurts me to say that becasue he does seem like a nice man, but he's not my cup of tea and he doesn't call to me in any sense.
From a practical perspective, the book is a very easy read. Frederic's stories and natural, graceful writing style make it a very difficult book to put down. It really just pulls you in. Plan on finishing it in a single sitting, or maybe two at the most.
Another reviewer pointed out that this is a God-based book. I would like to add to that assessment that the understanding communicated throughout the book is that God is many things to many people. As Shakespeare so beautifully observed: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." We at Empowerment Sanctuary like to use the phrase "The God of your understanding". Whether that Source Frederic calls God is better known to you as Goddess, Allah, Buddha, Mohamed, Jesus, Source, Creator, Universe, whatever...the message remains the same. Anyone who would choose to overlook a book because it refers to this energy as God, is choosing to overlook a wonderful opportunity to enrich their understanding and their very soul. Although the stories found within this beautiful book do reference God and Jesus throughout, it is not written, in my opinion, from a Christian perspective. Rather, the understanding communicated throughout the book is that this energy we call God and the soul we call Jesus is bigger than any one religion or the understanding of any one spiritual path. The messages found within this book and the style in which they are delivered are truly transformative for readers of any faith.
Take the NDE story for example. Mr. Delarue is able to describe his near death experience at the age of 12 with amazing detail and clarity. If you're interested in the NDE process, then you no doubt are aware that many who've experienced this have difficulty verbalizing the experience in any meaningful detail, or even being able to process the experience themselves for many years afterwords. This tends to leave us with no more than a glimpse of what happens when the body is dying, and always wanting to know more. Frustrating for the curious, as well as the one unable to articulate the experience.
Not so here. Mr. Delarue not only takes us through the process of his experience in great detail, but is also able to share with us how the experience transformed his life. We learn how he was able to take the lessons learned through this experience and apply them to his life and way of being in practical ways in order to create the life he was born to live. Amazing!
I was experiencing a grief process myself when this book made its way into my hands. Everything changed for me that day. My grief and sorrow were transformed to understanding and acceptance, and yes, even joy. I learned a new way to approach the loss of a loved one, and a new understanding of how deeply our sorrow hurts them, as they experience it with us. Never again will I approach a transitioning or transitioned soul with anything other than joy in my heart, lest I force upon them the experience of my own grief and sorrow. Learning to approach "death" in the same way we need to approach life, with joy and the freedom to allow all to be as it is meant to be, is life changing.
From the NDE, we go on to learn about Mr. Delarue's periodic life altering experiences, including an illness that left him temporarily paralyzed, and how he was able to apply what he learned during the NDE to enable himself to walk again. In reading his words, we are able to see just how easy it really is to shift our perspective in order to see the blessing of every experience.
This is really the main message that spoke to me through this book: that in all things there is a blessing. It may be difficult to see, but it is there nonetheless and we have only to choose to perceive it. Once we make that choice, those "hidden" blessings become easier and easier to see with each experience. It is in this way our lives are transformed and our spirits become free to create the life we were born to live.
A secondary message that may hit home for many is the truth that life is just easier when we allow spiritual guidance in our lives, regardless of what form that guidance takes. When we are open to perceiving guidance in any of the myriad of forms it might manifest as, we have less stress because we know we'll be given what we need to know, and that we aren't walking this journey alone.
I cannot recommend this book, and all of Mr. Delarue's music, highly enough. Too bad we're limited to only five stars. All of his work deserves more than that. It is with deepest gratitude that I thank Frederic Delarue for taking the time to write it and share it with the world. It is my hope that your experience in reading this book will be as transformative and healing for you as it has been for me.
