Getting lost while trekking or walking through a dense trail is perhaps our biggest fear. Handheld GPS, or Smartphones come in handy but they will be not functional if out of battery or signal. Therefore, having an “old-school” compass is crucial when you’re out in nature: on-trail or off.

It has been tried and tested through some of the most extreme experiments, suitable for use in extreme weather conditions and environments, it will be a very powerful tool for your adventures together with an appropriate map.

Why Choose Eyeskey EK-01 Compass?

durable metal compass

Stability and speed

temperature resistant

Durability

A compass for hiking must be durable because there is a high possibility it will get bumped in your backpack or fall on the ground at some point.

To ensure durability, EK-01 compass has an anodized Zinc Alloy metal housing, and is proofed to resist harmful conditions, such as sand particles or being emerged in water.

Stability & Speed

The needle should point to the north immediately and with ease. Even if you’re hiking leisurely, bad weather can come on fast and you’ll want a needle that settles fast.

EK-01 compass is liquid-filled and has a Saphire jewel bearing, allows the needle to move freely, and keeps it from twitching when you’re taking readings.

Wide Temperature Range

If you're hiking in low temperatures such as cold winter, or in hot temperatures like the desert, you want to make sure your compass can keep up.

The working temperature of EK-01 compass is -30° C to +60° C / -22° F to +140° F, ensured the liquid does not freeze or produce bubbles inside.

Off by a couple of degrees
4 Stars
Off by a couple of degrees
Solidly built, easy to read, but a little off direction. I sighted along a known North-South line both directions and, after considering magnetic declination for our location, found that it read about two degrees greater than it should. I also sighted through it to the North Star (Polaris) and confirmed it. I was still able to use it to confirm a property line by subtracting two degrees from the compass reading. One other minor thing is that the leveling bubble on my compass was off center when the compass was actually horizontal.Although it attaches to a tripod, I kept getting unexpected readings from the compass when attached to my aluminum tripod. I discovered there is some amount of ferrous metal in my tripod, as the compass would swing a little as I brought it closer to or farther away from the tripod. If you want to use it on a tripod, either make sure there is no steel in it or make one out of wood.

I bought this compass for my husband for Christmas. Of course, I wanted him to check it out to make sure it was what he wanted, plus he picked it out. As former military, he knows best what he needs and what all a good compass should possess. It arrived quickly, and out of the box it came. He couldn't be happier! It has many functions, all of which we have not tinkered with or discovered yet as we only played with it for a very short time. I will update as we look at it more or if anything changes for the worse. It will mount on a tripod, that's pretty handy. It has little "rulers" on the sides, one in cm and one in inches, and tables on the bottom. It also has a glow in the dark feature, that should come in handy too! When you put it up to eye level there is a magnifying glass to help you see what you need to easier, loving that! It allows you to calculate your elevation as well. It's pretty sharp looking too...we got the camouflage one, though he would've prefered black it was not an option when we bought it...it's digital camo. It comes with a nice little case too; it has a belt clip, which is perfect for my husband, and the case and the compass are waterproof. It's very sturdy and much heavier than we both expected it to be, it's metal, not plastic. The heaviness is not a bad thing in his eyes, nor mine, though other reviewers have complained about the weight. We both think it to be very reasonable. This is a VERY NICE compass! I'll be the first to admit that I'm not great with a compass, but this one would be very easy to learn with both for adults and children. Anyone would be thrilled to get this compass! We both highly recommend buying this one. It's worth every penny...You won't be disappointed!

This thing is cool, durable, all metal and does go in my bugout/hiker/range bag or pretty much at anytime. I'm heading out to spots that need at least general idea of direction. One thing I really need to practice is using the compass and map read/hikes. It takes practice practice practice to get the hang of using the flip up range finder as you have to repeatedly need to refer back to the formula to figure it out and trust me you won't right out of the box first try, or I'm simply to average and it's just me. HAHA. It'll come to you, and you'll be able to very close "proximate" in no time. One other neat item is the compass has a peep hole that gives you compass readings in Degrees as well, that give you a more precise reading to set your compass needle as well as orientating the map correctly. This is now gumball rubber ball compass toy; it actually works, and the price is great for a lifetime tool.. Only reason for a 4 star is because "by me" I haven't truly field tested it but I'm confident it is going to do the job and get you back to beer camp if that were the case..

I always read at least 15 reviews before considering a product and I noticed one that mentioned this compass was not accurate. Weighing the risk, I got it anyway and made it a distinct point to cross check it with an existing reliable compass and the gps compass on my phone as well. I checked the magnetic declination for my exact location and confirmed the compass was nearly perfect, maybe half a degree if I can even tell. I may have been lucky and got a good QC unit but before you trust it, check yours to be sure. Otherwise, the leveling bubble was accurate and helpful to keep the compass from binding up while finding north, and the other features appear to me to be functional and accurate.

HEAVY DUDE!!! Not quite professional. Hard to see the DIGITS w/o Reading Glasses. The RING Glows in the Dark, but the NEEDLE doesn't. Doesn't lay completely flat on a MAP. Feels good in the hand. Bends your brain just to set the DELINEATION. Looks Military. Better than a cheap-bubble compass. Works the best for Me in the light/daylight while i am wearing My Reading Glasses - which is never outside: i have 20-15 Vision, but i also wear Reading Glasses. Indoor devices drive the compass nuts; computers, radios, fans, & cordless devices play havoc with THE GREAT WHITE NORTH!!!

The top half of the compass is cheap plastic, and the lid is very loose. I thought that might just be mine but on reading other reviews it appears to be a common problem., At the end of the day, I just did not feel confident using it, so I returned the compass and bit the bullet and bought a very good one. After all, if you are in the field, you want kit you can rely on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money
Reviewed in Canada on September 9, 2016
Color: EK1001 Green CompassVerified Purchase
There are at least 20 of these compasses on sale here. They differ mainly in name and color, some have added clinometers. I suspect they are all made in the same factory in China. However, my past experience in similar circumstances suggests that the quality control on the purchase side makes all the difference. Therefore I decided to buy one that cost slightly more than the minimum price (currently around$10). I was not disappointed. The compass is solidly build from cast metal. All the parts line up as they should. The lines are placed correctly, the numbers are clearly visible. The sighting mechanism was what I was mainly interested in (I use the compass to position sundials). I was pleased to note that it worked really well: The compass card rotated quickly and damped down equally quickly. The sighting lines are easily visible with the compass right up to the eye. An accurate(?) sight was obtained rather quickly and easily. I compared this process with a similar one on three other compasses I own for the same purpose. This one was the simplest and quickest to use. The sight reading was within 2 degrees of two others (in the process I found that the fourth, the most expensive compass differed from the other three by almost 6 degrees but that is another story). I tried to verify the sights by using it with a map but was unable to do so: All three compasses were off consistently by several degrees to the west. I have not discover the cause of this and I am still working on it. Thus I am unable to confirm the absolute accuracy of this instrument at present.
A few nit picks that stop me giving this item 5 stars:
1) The bezel is calibrated in increments of 5 degrees while the sighting scale is calibrated to 1 degree. Even a 2 degree calibration would have been better.
2) The bezel does not turn smoothly and tends to hang up. It is still usable, however.
3) My main complaint is that the sighting scale has larger marks every 10 degrees only. It would have been helpful to mark the 5 degree stages also. What slows one down when taking a bearing is trying to determine if one is at 4, 5 or 6 degrees having to count the degree marks laboriously.

I cannot comment on durability. The lines on glass seem to be printed, not etched, and one wonders at what stage they will begin to rub off.

Overall, however, at just over $20 this is an excellent buy. It has become my go-to compass. A word of warning: Given its metal construction it is quite heavy and as such may not be the best choice for long distance hiking where every ounce of weight counts.

Added 18/9/2016:
I did some more testing. I took several bearings of local landmarks and after correcting for magnetic declination I compared them with the bearings generated by a computer from GPS data of each point. I was pleased that the worst difference was 2.5 degrees, others were much closer. Given the methodology I would consider this a satisfactory result.
More to the point, I repeated the same sights using a new Iris 50 compass which is designed specifically for taking bearings. Most of the bearings were identical using the two compasses, a couple were 0.5 degrees apart and one 1 degree. Interestingly the Eyeskeye was almost as quick to get a bearing as the Iris 50 yet the latter has the advantage of eliminating parallax.
If I could I would increase the rating to 4.5 star.
A word of caution: If you are gong to use the tripod attachment make sure that nothing on the tripod, *especially the screw itself* are not made of iron. Ask me why :-)
