A really great story line, if you can follow it. I can understand how some people might find it confusing or hard to follow, but as long as you don't just play through the game without listening to the commentary, phone messages, ect., you will find it very intriguing.
A great selection of weapons, some seem reality based while some of the more damaging and advanced ones are really cool and fun to mess around with.
A great variety of locations and maps that the story is set in, which leads into:
A GREAT atmosphere. I'll get to scares and horror elements next, but I thought the ambiance created by the music, environment sounds, footsteps, and many other sounds (I won't ruin some of them for you) made for a very creepy game in that department.
A great variety of enemy combatants. There were two in particular especially, but I won't ruin that either.
The ending. Wait for it. All I will say.
I have two complaints about this game, nothing huge, but something I think is improved on in the sequels:
Firstly, when you are getting towards the end of the game, the just shooting everything gets a little old, I wish there were a few more scares and horror elements thrown in. There are some the nightmares or whatever they are, and whenever you see Paxton and Alma are very creepy, but not a whole lot in the actual game play is too scary besides the ambiance. This is all that kept me from giving it 5/5.
It wasn't overly challenging, there were two points in the game that I had to work at, but overall, it wasn't too hard to beat. Especially advancing through the maps, I had to search a little extra for a ladder or place to crawl through a few times, but I found it pretty easy to advance from Interval to Interval.
Overall, an awesome game to start off the series, I am a little through the 2nd one and I can already tell it is going to be downright awesome. Will post that review as well.
Now,the gameplay is spectatular due to intelligent A.I.They will call for backup, flank you,or outright assault you as a team and the game isn't afraid to challenge you by pitting you against a mech once in a while or a fully armored enemy with a penetrator. You'll have to really use your wits and combat reflexes to make it through each skirmish and the weapons are fun to use.The only downside is that the slo-mo mechanic may be a crutch, especially on the harder difficulties. If you want to play the whole game without slo-mo,the choice is yours. There are health and reflex boosters to attain but since there is no new game plus option, you'll start from scratch every new game. The health system is the old school 100 health,100 armor system.
The only downsides to F.E.A.R. are the visuals,"scares",and sound quality. While saved on the PC due to higher resolution and better Anti-Aliasing,the console versions look ugly. The texture quality is bad,the anti-alising is questionable, and the ps3 version runs at a lower native resolution than the 360 version. The "scares" are just lazy "flick a switch, show a shadow" stuff and kinda gets in the way of the action. As for sound,I've found it hard to understand what the NPCS were saying, even after adjusting the music and sound effects. Also, there is no option for subtitles which hurts.
Overall,I strongly recommend F.E.A.R to any FPS fan.If you can,get the PC version. If you can't,get the 360 version.Sorry for the wall of text but amazon prevented me from writing this review in paragraph form.
