F3D Skyknight in Action Paperback – January 1, 2012

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

The US Navy's first all-weather jet fighter, the Douglas F3D Skyknight, traces its origins to 1945, when the Navy began studies for a jet-powered carrier-based night fighter. Ready for service when war broke out in Korea in 1950, the Skyknight, also known as Willy the Whale, proved its worth in the capable hands of pilots and radar operators with Marine Night Fighter Squadron VMF(N)-513. The F3D scored the highest number of aerial victories for an all-weather jet fighter in that conflict. Later, in the late 1950s and 1960s, Douglas Aircraft, in conjunction with the Navy and Marine Corps, modified a number of the Skyknights to perform a variety of tasks. This book chronicles the development and operational history of the Navy fighter from conception to duty in the Korean War, to service as a night interceptor in Vietnam, where it was an ECM/ELINT platform, jamming North Vietnamese missile and anti-aircraft sites. Packed with never-before-published photographs covering the entire operational life of the F3D-1/2, F3D-2B, F3D-1/2M, F3D-2T2, and the EF-10B variants.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is a superb book chock full of photographs and historical background of its combat use in Korea and Vietnam. Though 'Willie the Whale' is no longer in the air, we can still enjoy reading about and seeing photos of this most interesting aircraft. Highly recommended." -Scott Van Aken, Modeling Madness.com
May 2012

"A good solid, reference for this long-serving aircraft which flew from 1948 until its final example was retired in 1987. Not too bad for Willie the Whale. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in Naval jets, Korean and Vietnam War buffs, and those of you who like nightfighters," -Phil Peterson,
IPMS/USA

"This is one of the more interesting and well-researched
In Action series books that I have read...I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it." -CDR Doug Siegfried, USN (Ret), The Hook

This book is another one of the better books in the Squadron Walk Around series. It clearly shows the shape of the engine inlets, an area that has been consistently, misrepresented by the plastic model manufactures; think of the Czech Model disaster. This book will help you correct that area of the kit if you so desire. This book covers another forgotten aircraft in the U.S. inventory, one that served for a very long time serving well in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. It is a nice book to add to your aviation library.

Over the years, Squadron has published dozen of the now-classic "In Action" series.
My favorites are those that highlight the lesser-seen aircraft, and the Douglas Skyknight fits the bill.
Their format allows them to publish books on esoteric aircraft that probably wouldn't interest other publishers so many of their books are likely to be the only major reference works on those aircraft.

Happily, the F3D book is in their latest series which features a sturdy look-like binding and more color photos which highlights the various paint schemes worn by Skyknights during their 20 year career. I particularly appreciated the color photos from its Korean operations and from later in its career as well as the radar test beds used by Raytheon from 1969-81. Many of the type's survivors are also illustrated.

Squadron books are great value and deserve a space on the bookshelves of every aviation historian.

The F3D Skyknight (re-designated F-10 on October 1, 1962) rarely gets the attention it deserves, even though thousands of naval aviators and radar operators flew the aircraft in Korea, theCold War, and Vietnam. When you get a book about an aircraft from this publisher, you expect a high standard of detail, comprehensiveness and accuracy. Alan C. Carey exceeds this standard with a well-written and well-illustrated guide to the Skyknight's story. This is an essential work of reference for the historian or the modeler and it's well illustrated with photos and diagrams. If you're into this era in naval and Marine Corps aviation, you've got to have this book.

Alan Carey's book on the F3d is a nice concise tome on an aircraft that is often overlooked by most historians and enthusiasts. It is not only a valuable look at the different versions of the plane but the book also includes details about its usage. The highlight to me was the great half and full page pictures showing details that are normally difficult to find. I highly recommend this book not only for modelers but anyone interested in knowing about a very important aircraft that served the armed forces for two decades.

This is a great book. I just got done going through mine. I like the fact that the book takes you from before this aircraft existed through it's retirement and explains where a few can be found today. I also didn't realize the extent of the combat career of the F3D. It's a great book if you have any interest in the F3D, and if you are a model builder, it is a must own. Tons of pictures! Thanks again for all of the hard work to put this together.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Carey's latest book on the Skynight. As a novice in the history of early military jets, I have been looking to learn as much as I can about these trailblazing aircraft. The book covers all variants and is filled with excellent photos that show the Skynight in action, on the ground, and the various components of the aircraft. Another great title from Mr. Carey and from Action.
