6th Gen i5 processor
SSD storage drive
8 gigs of ram
Very little bloat ware. Only removed a few piece of software
Very snappy and good performance for the bit I used it (removed a bit of crapware, installed basic software before it was given as a graduation gift)
Price vs Performance I feel hits the sweet spot with this laptop.
Light, easy to carry in a backpack.
USB 3.1 C
Several USB 3 and USB 2 ports.
Very quite - but no power indicator.
No removable battery, if the battery starts to degrade you are stuck with it.
Mostly plastic housing, but what can you expect for the price?
Power button does not light up when turned on. Normally wouldn't mind, but the laptop is so quite when you turn it on, its hard to tell if its on.
This was a graduation gift for someone going off to collage, so I wanted a laptop that would preform well at word processing and school work, while still getting good battery life so she can use it all day. I wanted a SSD drive, 6th gen CPU (for both preformance and lower power use) and to have 8hrs of batter life. This was a hard order to fill while staying in the $500-$600 price range that I had agreed on with the other person paying for 1/2 the laptop.
I found most of your "budge" $300-$400 laptops where not worth the price when looking at the specs. Very low end CPU's that would stumble over basic task. Lower amounts of ram, but then they brag up a "1TB hard drive", but is a 5400 RMP bottom of the light drive.
On the other end of the spectrum we have high end laptops that start around $700 and where overkill for school use. Finally started looking for Business class and mid-range laptops, which was still someone of a crap shoot giving me products between $400 POS laptops and $1200 laptops with a dedicated GPU that was not necessary in this case.
Finally found this guy, and he fit the bill perfectly. I hope the battery life holds up and the goes the distance.
I wish I could make this product easier to find for people looking to get a midrange laptop.
WARNING: You are about to read what is likely going to be the most nitpicky review of your life. Leave now, or brace yourself.
Summary: This laptop has served my purposes as an amateur music producer very well. It has enough processing power for basic activities like word processing and web browsing all the way up to running programs like Ableton Live 9 and games such as Half-Life 2 without a hitch. However, this power does sacrifice some battery life. I have averaged somewhere around 5-6 hours of battery life, which may be enough for most people, but it won't last all day if you plan on using it unplugged. For the price ($549.00 at the time) and the specs, this laptop is a great deal.
Specs: The Asus F556UA-AS54 comes standard with an Intel Core i5 6200U running at 2.3 GHz (Turbo up to 2.8 GHz), 8 GB of DDR3 ram (not sure if it is LPDDR3 or DDR3L or just DDR3), 256 GB of storage on an SSD (also not sure if it uses a M.2 SATA interface or PCIe). The connections on the left side are as follows from left to right: proprietary power port, Ethernet port, VGA port, HDMI port, USB 3.0 port, USB 3.1 type C with ThunderBolt 3, and a Kensington Lock slot. The connections on the right are as follows: Full-size SD card reader, combo mic/headphone jack, a USB 2.0 port, and a DVD-RW tray. There are no other ports or external physical connections on any other part of the laptop.
Build Quality: Without a doubt, the thing that makes and breaks a laptop is the build quality (literally) The construction of the case is all plastic. The lid, and keyboard deck have a gold, metallic-looking finish that attracts fingerprints really easily. The sides have a textured brownish plastic that makes the laptop easier to hold, and the bezels and bottom of the laptop are a matte-black plastic. While the keyboard has surprisingly little flex (almost none, actually), the lid does have flex. If you press down with some force, the screen behind it will distort where the pressure is applied. While this won't be an issue for most people, it can disappointing for those who expect metal construction. Although is is made of plastic, the laptop overall feels sturdy. It probably won't survive many falls, however.
Screen: The screen of this laptops is a TN LED LCD panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p. Viewing angles are average, as colors are massively distorted if you view the image at an angle sharper than 45 degrees up and down. Left to right, colors become washed out quickly, but remain somewhat true to the original. Speaking of which, color accuracy (in my opinion) leaves a lot to be desired without the Asus Splendid Utility. Colors look a little blue, and blacks are particularly bad (it is an LCD panel, mind you). But with a little adjustment and using the Splendid Utility, colors on the screen can become better. If your use-case demands color accuracy, this laptop is not for you. Brightness and viewability outdoors, however, is a different story. There is huge difference between 0% and 100% brightness. at 0%, the screen is really dim, and that is a good thing, because when you turn this thing on in a pitch black room, you won't be immediately blinded by the Asus logo. 100% brightness is fairly bright, and it is easily usable outdoors (due in part to the matte screen finish, a nice touch). Overall, the screen, while not perfect, is not bad to use. However, if you are used to looking at plasma TVs or IPS/OLED phone screens, you may be in for a shock.
Keyboard: As I am writing this review on the laptop I am reviewing, I thought I'd give the keyboard a section. The keyboard is NOT backlit. This wasn't a shock to me, but it is a massive disappointment. You never realize how convenient and useful backlighting is on a keyboard until you are forced to be without it in a pitch black environment. Key travel is shallow, but the action is precise and clicky, not mushy like other inexpensive Windows laptops. Layout is standard for 15.6 in laptops, with the main keys shifted to the left to make room for a numeric keypad. I don't mind this layout, but I know some people hate that shifted feel, and thought it was worth mentioning. One thing I have noticed, is that there are full-sized arrow keys, but, in order to make room for the up/down arrows, the right shift key was shortened. This was a bit disorienting at first, but it doesn't take long to get used to. The function keys are active by default, and you have to hold down Fn to use shortcuts, but I think this can be changed in the settings. Overall, the keyboard experience is nice, especially for the price, but the lack of backlighting and shallow key travel can be difficult to get used to. Keep that in mind, midnight essay writers.
Trackpad: The trackpad at first was awful to use. The surface is plastic, and it kept sticking to my index finger, making for a really jumpy, unenjoyable experience. Also, the Asus drivers that came preinstalled worked at boot, but stopped working after waking up from sleep, reverting back to generic trackpad drivers, which is just awful. After a while though, as I used it more and more, the surface got slicker as oils from my skin gathered. If you can be patient and use the trackpad at first, then it should be no big deal later on, as the experience will become more enjoyable. The driver issue was fixed when I added the trackpad detector executable to the startup list. I disabled UAC so it would stop asking permission everytime I woke it up. When Asus Smart Gesture software works, it works really well: excellent tracking, good gestures, and even some customized gestures from Asus. However, it seems that a lot of people have had trouble with it across many Asus devices. If you want a reliable trackpad from the getgo, this laptop is not going to do it (at least from what I have experienced). However, if you are willing to work for it, the trackpad becomes enjoyable to use, even though it is not a glass, Precision trackpad. Overall, the trackpad and drivers have some flaws that Asus needs to fix, but it is not impossible to use, even for long periods.
- Two speakers can be located at the bottom of the computer, somewhat facing the user. Volume is good enough in a medium sized room with little ambient sound. But, in a bigger room, or in a noiser environment, the speakers will not cut it. They are not very powerful, and since they are down firing, the sound they produce cannot be heard directly. Sound quality is about average. Standard laptop speakers with a lack of bass, overly pronounced high-midrange, and tinny treble. If you plan on using the speakers of this laptop as the primary way of hearing sound on your laptop, consider another. For reference, the speakers on a Macbook Air are louder than the speakers on the Asus, but the Asus does edge out on sound quality.
- The combo mic/headphone jack is clear. Pretty standard, actually. Sound quality and volume is more influenced by your headphones/speakers/microphone(s).
Overall, sound is okay for most, but if listening to audio on your laptop without a bluetooth speaker or headphones is important to you, look elsewhere.
Battery Life: In my opinion, battery life is one of the most important things in a mobile computer, as there is no point in having a laptop that cannot last for as long as you need it. This laptop averages 5-6 of mixed use at 50% screen brightness. You can get an hour or two more if you are really frugal with power. Even with light use all day, I rarely get more than 6 and a half hours. If long endurance is important to you, this laptop cannot deliver more than 5 or 6 hours at most. All day battery is not a thing with this laptop. But if you are the type of person who doesn't spend much time away from the charger, this laptop is a good choice for those on a budget.
Overall: This laptop has met my expectations. It has allowed me to do what I want without breaking the bank. 8 gigs of RAM and 256 GB of SSD are major pluses. After you use a device with SSD, you'll never want to go back. Bottom line: For $529.00 US, you almost cannot go wrong with the Asus F556UA. I would recommend this product as a good midpoint between an ultraportable and a traditional laptop for a reasonable price.
4 out of 5 stars
The downside to all this is the lid can be pushed down, some plastic feel cheap. I don't think the display is an IPS display as the viewing angles do suffer at certain points. But for $550 you are getting a great deal and a decent quality laptop.
