"Fashion - 150 Years" is an encyclopedic work, not only in content but in size and weight. Fashion is taken from about the mid 1800s to the present. Seeling locates the beginnings of modern fashion about 1860 when the English clothing designer Charles Frederick Worth working in Paris put labels with his signature on the gowns he designed. Seeling sees this as turning clothing--however ornamental, stylized, or individualized--into art--Worth was the first "fashion designer."

Since Worth's innovative touch, there have been scores of outstanding fashion designers--all of whom make their appearance. The history of fashion from the mid 1860s is related in terms of profiles of the leading, most imaginative and skilled, most influential, and often most acclaimed fashion designers accompanied by abundant photographic material. One could follow the history just by following the copious, most color photographs. One sees how fashion spread out from its beginnings in Paris to the global, popular enterprise it is today. But one wants to read the profiles too for their colorful biographical material and ideas and approaches to fashion, and for putting the respective designer into the context of fashion history.

Seeling has been a top editor at Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Marie Claire after her time as a journalist interviewing many world-class celebrities. This incomparable work of hers can be used as a text on fashion history and also a reference. And its readable text plus the countless photographs give it the style of a popular book for informative and entertaining reading on fashion. And it's an ideal coffee-table book.

I must be the only person who was not impressed by this book. After reading all the great reviews I was quite excited to get this book.

The book reads like a magazine? I know that the author was the editor in chief of the glossy magazines such as ”Cosmopolitan“, ”Vogue“, and ”Marie Claire“ but I guess I want a book to be a book and a magazine to be a magazine. I also wished they had spent more time time in the earlier years of fashion there were also no detail pictures which I have grown to enjoy in hardcover coffee table books. I liked the first quarter of the book and the rest I did it enjoy as much.

This book is massive in size 512 pages is rare to find. While there are a lot of pictures they were pictures that I have seen in other fashion books so nothing new to report in that arena. The book is extraordinarily well bound and the pages of the book has this wonderful slick glossy texture to it. It is a very richly made book. The book is organized very well in decades and in designers and they did have a few great designers in there Westwood, Fortuny and some others. I understand that fashion is sometimes dictated around the world we live in and what is happening around us at the time-war, economics, pop culture, music etc...but this book just had too much of the culture part and not enough of the fashion for me. If it had been a book on photos and that is what I understood I was buying I would have been happy.

This is an amazing fashion encyclopedia which traces the history of fashion design and couture over a century and half. The book is so heavy but very well bound, it's full of large high quality photos showing beautiful creations from every known label. The text is highly informative but also engaging and far from being dry or boring. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a comprehensive beautifully illustrated historical overview detailing the development and evolving world of fashion design.

I love this book! On its own it looks fantastic on any bookshelf, delve into the pages and this book unfolds the secrets and stories behind fashion designers. The style and layout of the content reminds me of those autobiography-type magazine articles.
These photos are fantastic and openly displays the variety of fashion from the cute and inspiring, to the odd and very abstract!
The photographs are really well spaced and nicely breaks up the very informative text. An excellent reference book with interesting and little-known facts about these designers.

First and foremost I must comment on the size of this book; it's like a fashion bible! Seriously, this is the biggest book in my library to date and I don't think anything will come close to it, hold an encyclopedia. I couldn't wait to dive into this book, but I had another book I was working on at the time. I'm happy to say that I began this book yesterday evening and it is well worth the cost and rather informative. Although I'm only on the third chapter I feel like I've learned a good bit about designers from the beginning of fashion. Don't get me wrong, this text could never be as informative as individual books on all of the designers mentioned. However, this book does a remarkable job of taking over a century of fashion and addressing it with more than a simple line or two. Thus far, the book seems to be relatively unbaised and tries to present the truth (they even went so far as touse a quote from Vogue USA that slighted Chanel...how often do you see that done?).

All in all, this was money well spent and a great addition for anyone student, professional, or fashionista interested in fashion history (from the late 19th century into the 2000s), designs, or photography (the pictures are rather beautiful).
