I wanted a small and unobtrusive wireless keyboard that would work with the media player for entering text in the search boxes for YouTube, Netflix, etc. This little wireless USB keyboard does that and so much more.
First, it's small. I can lay it in the palm of my and it barely overlaps long ways. It's also very thin and lightweight. These are both huge pluses! I've got far too many remotes for my entertainment center as it is, so have something this powerful with such a small foot print is incredible. And even though it is small, it is sturdy and well built. It is also very easy to use and type with using your thumbs as if you were texting on a messaging cell phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. In fact, it's even easier than that as the keys on this device are a bit bigger than those on the cell phone, so it's a breeze to use.
Second, it's backlit which makes entering key presses in dim light a snap. This is a big plus when you're watching a movie or getting ready to watch and don't want to turn on the flood lights!
Third, the Arrow, Back and Enter keys work perfectly and are fully supported by the WD media player, so I can use this keyboard to fully navigate every menu in the WD media player without ever having to pick up it's own native remote. This keyboard basically replaces the standard WD remote! The only exception is when using some Online services that don't drop back to the menu when you hit Back. For those, you still need to hit the Home key on the WD remote to break out of those applications. And of course, you still need the WD native remote to power the media player On & Off.
Finally, the USB transmitter fits into a small sleeve that rests in a hollow of the device. At first, I thought the transmitter didn't get shipped, then I found it was hidden in that storage hollow. That makes perfect sense for traveling so that you don't run the risk of losing the transmitter when you take it to another location. Also, the transmitter is the smallest I've ever seen, yet it works flawlessly with great range. It's obvious a lot of thought went into something as simple (yet required) as the USB transmitter. I'm impressed.
I haven't used this with a Laptop or PC yet, so I haven't been able to play with the touchpad. But given the incredible performance of every other aspect of this keyboard, I've no doubt it will work well.
There is also a laser pointer built into the side of the keyboard. I can see this coming in handy during a presentation where you would use the keyboard and touch pad to navigate and change screens on a Laptop or PC presentation shown on a large screen or projector. Then you could use the laser pointer to "point" at certain things on the screen to call attention to them during your presentation.
And.....the laser pointer gives you hours of fun with your cats!
This is definitely a 5 Star product (and then some). I'm very, very impressed!
Pros:
* The touchpad is responsive, and while not as large as what you'd find on a laptop, is still large enough that it doesn't feel cramped.
* The right-click, left-click, and arrow buttons are conveniently placed, and the up and down arrow buttons double as PgUp and PgDn, so navigation is a breeze.
* The ability to rotate the device 90 degrees and hold it like a TV remote is very convenient. The inclusion of a laser pointer makes this a great little device for giving presentations.
* The keyboard is backlit, making it great for controlling a media server or HTPC in a darkened room.
* Setup is a breeze. Just plug in the (very tiny) USB dongle, and start using the keyboard. It "just works" on Windows, Linux, and Macs.
* The USB dongle is tiny and unobtrusive. In fact, the body of the dongle is smaller than the USB plug. It's barely noticeable even when plugged into a front USB port. Also, the ability to securely store the dongle in the keyboard allows you to carry the keyboard around without worrying about losing the dongle.
* Wireless connectivity means you don't need line-of-sight like you do for a TV remote. This is great for computers set up as media servers and stored out of sight.
* The device is charged from a mini-USB cable just like many mobile phones and gaming console controllers, which means you don't have to keep replacing batteries.
Cons:
* The dongle, and therefore the antenna, is pretty small, limiting the effective range of the device. Interference from other devices using the 2.4GHz band, such as Wi-Fi (specifically 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n) and some cordless phones, can further reduce the effective range. (You probably won't want to use this device on a computer sitting right next to a wireless router.) Even so, the range is generally sufficient for the distances at which it's most likely to be used.
* Because of the arrangement and size of the keys, using some common keyboard shortcuts, particularly Ctrl-Z (Undo), Ctrl-X (Cut), and Ctrl-C (Copy), is a bit tricky. Also, the lack of a right Shift means typing uppercase letters located on the left side of the keyboard is a bit awkward.
* The keyboard really isn't very ergonomic. It reminds me a bit of the original Nintendo controllers. It's just a bit too thin and rectangular to be held comfortably, especially by someone with largish hands, except when turned 90 degrees. A friend of mine has a Logitech diNovo Mini keyboard, which feels much better in your hands... but also costs over twice as much as this one without really having any additional functionality.
* The keys are arranged in a regular grid (as seen in the item photos), rather than slightly offset as on a full-sized keyboard. While it's easy to understand the reasoning behind this design choice, and I doubt anyone is going to be doing much touch-typing on this device anyway, this slight difference in keyboard arrangement still takes some getting used to.
Overall, it's an excellent little device. There may be some better mini keyboards out there, but none this affordable with these features. The backlit keyboard and ability to rotate the keyboard 90 degrees and hold it like a tv remote makes it an excellent choice for controlling media servers or HTPCs, and the integrated laser pointer makes it quite handy when giving presentations.

I could have got a normal size keyboard and mouse but it would probably cost more overall.
While it is quite tiny, it is still bigger than keyboards that we have on our phone for texting.
The touch pad works well, but may need some practice to use it to its full capability.
It worked well straight out of the box, with the TV recognising it as soon as I plugged the USB into the slot.
I also tried it on my I-Mac and it worked well there too.
One thing that i didn't see in the other reviews, is that you need 2 USB slots, unless you want to keep plugging/unplugging the dongle that goes in the TV and the USB charger lead.
I have a spare USB hub which i have connected to the TV and both the dongle and charging cable work perfectly with this, and it now sits on top of the DVD player ready for use at any time.
So you may want to order one of those too at the same time.
The keypad lights up at the touch of a button too, so you can send messages on Facebook,e-mails etc through your TV, while your partner is asleep on the sofa.
The red laser pointer is not really necessary in the home environment, apart from teasing my cats.
The instruction booklet is not very comprehensive, and has a few spelling mistakes, but it gives you the general idea and most of the functions of the keypad are quite easy to pick up.
Small and smart, a very good product at a very reasonable price.
