This is a review of the TWiT.TV for Fire TV app, version 2.01
This app took a long time after installation for all the menus to fill with available content. I was just about ready to write a scathing review of this app and after about nearly an hour, the menus finally started showing content. Weird.
The main menu has the following items in it: - Shows - What's New - Favorites - Live Stream - Schedule - Inside TWiT
Here is what you get for content when selecting each menu item: - Shows - This is a horizontal list of all the various TWiT.TV offerings. Included here is Tech News Today, Before You Buy, Know How..., Floss Weekly, All About Android, This Week in Enterprise Tech, iFive for the iPhone, Ham Nation, iPad Today, Windows Weekly, MacBreak Weekly, This Week in Google, this Week in TECH, Security Now, Home Theater Geeks, This Week in Computer Hardware, Triangulation, This Week in LAW, The Weekly Daily Giz Wiz, TWiT Live Specials, The Tech Guy, Tech News 2Night, Marketing Mavericks, Coding 101, Android App Arena, TWiT Bits, Padre's Corner. Once you select a show, the next screen allows you to either Add to Favorites, or Remove Favorite. - What's New - 25 of the most recent shows are listed here, presumably in order of freshness. But you can't select anything as a Favorite. - Favorites - Any show that you mark as a "Favorite" is listed here. - Live Stream - I'm watching a "Live Stream" of a show that has a "Previously Recorded" title on it. That's "Live" ? Otherwise this is in fact the Live Stream. - Schedule - This shows the upcoming shows for the next 14 days. But you can't select any of them as "Favorites" - Inside TWiT - This seems to be an archive of special moments and events on TWiT. Somewhere in the vicinity of 110 segments are available.
I like that I can access archives of the shows, but when you are scrolling horizontally, there is no progress bar to give you any indication of how many shows might be in the row.
The video and sound quality is great.
App could use some polishing but does seem to work pretty well.
I bought this app for the expressed purpose of watching TWiT's live stream through my Fire Stick. Dishearteningly, it has proven to be woefully inadequate at this task. As other reviewers have commented, the video constantly freezes, at which point the stream must be restarted by hitting the AFTV remote's "back" button and re-choosing the desired stream. It has never recovered on its own. In fact, left long enough, I'll get the AFTV screen saver! Interestingly, only the video portion seems to have this quirk. The audio will continue playing just fine.
The above occurs with either the Bitgravity "HD Video" or "Small Video" streams. The USTREAM video has never worked in this app.
I have tested this against my android phone's TWiT app and TWiT's live feed (USTREAM) and neither exhibit the same issue so I am fairly sure the problem lies with this app itself. To be completely sure, as soon as my bluetooth mouse arrives I plan to sideload a browser onto the fire stick and see if any of the streams have the same problem. I will update this review if they do.
Another issue I have with this app is that it seems quite slow in getting the days netcasts. For example, as I began writing this review (about midnight EDT) I wanted to watch TNT. The latest one available on this app was yesterday's show. After a thorough search, couldn't find it. Bounce over to the YouTube app and low and behold, there is was! Not sure where or how this app is getting its recordings but clearly, they need to snap that process up a bit. (BTW: 01:30 EDT now and still ep 1480 nowhere to be found.)
And finally, the UI needs a bit of work. It took me a while to figure it out because there are whole menus hidden from view unless you scroll but there is no indicator that you can or should scroll.
This app has a lot of promise but clearly it still needs a bit of work.
This is my dream application for viewing Twit.tv content on the Fire TV.
You can browse all of the on-demand content available on the Twit network in addition to viewing the livestream. There is a section for all of the shows that you can drill into as well as sections or views for what's been most recently posted. I particularly like the Schedule view which basically functions as a Twit.tv guide (which appears to tell you when the shows will come on in your set time zone, which is super helpful).
There are settings for what quality levels you prefer in the on-demand content and the livestream and they work well. The video quality on the Fire TV is excellent.
Anyway, if you watch a lot of Twit content and you have a Fire TV you NEED this application. Worth every single penny.
Was happy to see Twit was available Fire TV! I do have a few gripes though, where as the app is free on Roku and most other devices Fcon (the developer) charges for Amazon Fire TV (stick). The price is cheap enough, and if it helps out the developer it's fine. But my main gripe only a certain amount of back shows are available through the app, also if you fall asleep and try to re-watch a show you have to be quick with the remote and rewind button as it doesn't auto restart at the end. A lot of times it just keeps going back to the menu when you try to select a show you watched, and or slept through, sometimes I'm quick enough to hit rewind so that I can rewind back to where I last was. Also speaking of rewind and fast forward, it seems pretty wonky on this app. it's more of a multi-second skip so you end up missing something if your trying to fast forward, then rewind your rewatching what you already watched.
