After experiencing some pain in my fingertips from "bottoming out" while typing on cheaper keyboards (mac keyboards are also a huge culprit!), I started looking for a keyboard upgrade to resolve the issue. 10 minutes of googling will show that most professionals hold no stock in modern "ergonomic" keyboards aside from heavy bruisers such as the Kinesis, which involve learning an entirely new typing style. I decided to try a mechanical keyboard, because of their reputation for quality, comfort, and increased typing speed. However, I was reticent about both the noise and cost. Let me cover these categories:
Quality: The Filco is built like a sexy, black brick. It is clear that the keyboard's built on a heavy metal plate, and this gives a comfortable heft that isn't found in computing peripherals nowadays. The cherry switches are rated for 30 million key presses, so this keyboard will last for over a decade of hard use.
Comfort: It took 2 days to get used to the higher "drop" of the keyboard (about 44mm, as opposed to ~8 for a mac keyboard), but the pain I was experiencing disappeared. The action of the keys is incredibly crisp and precise- this is the reason NO ONE switches back to a rubber dome switch keyboard after trying a mechanical keyboard.
Increased type speed: I haven't noticed a dramatic increase in speed, but I *feel* as though I'm typing faster, for what that's worth!
Noise: The brown switches (tactile action) output much less noise than I expected. Normal typing on the brown switches is still quieter than anyone who "thunder types," so don't worry about disrupting anyone in your office. My only concern would be using the keyboard in a room where others are trying to sleep, as a normal keyboard is almost too loud already.
Cost: I am a software engineer, and typing is my livelihood. I use a keyboard for 8+ hours a day, 5 days at work, and for an additional 1-2 hours a night. That's upwards of 50 hours that I spend relying on my keyboard. If the price is daunting, don't let it. A keyboard is something a modern office professional uses constantly , every day. It is certainly worth the investment.
Additionally, Amazon's return policies on electronic mean you can basically try the product for thirty days, and return it for the price of shipping. Although good luck giving it up once you've tried it!

Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless - Cherry Brown Switches
I chose the Filco Majestouch over a Das keyboard based on the overwhelming recommendation of my coworkers. The matte black finish does not show smudges like a glossy finish does. The design is elegant and no-frills, perfect for an office setting.
Concerns about the brightness of the LED indicators are unjustified. From any angle aside from directly above the lights, the brightness ic completely reasonable.
I chose the tenkeyless version because I travel often, and was looking for a keyboard I could easily slip into a bag. The Filco in its box is about the width of a 15" laptop, and easily fits in bags.
This keyboard sits higher above a desk than cheaper models you may be used to, and I would recommend a wrist rest (put it right against the keyboard, under your palms, not your wrists!) such as the 3M Gel Wrist Rest , even though the rest extends several inches beyond the keyboard.
CONS:
- The USB cable is non-detachable, which could be problematic if it frays/breaks
- Tenkeyless wrist rests are tough to find.
- Non-standard key caps makes finding replacements more difficult
- Requires third-party software to map the function keys to volume, screen brightness, etc.
* The mechanics: This USB Cherry MX Brown keyboard has a 4mm long travel on a key press. At first I didn't think that was a big deal but coming over from an membrane, I found myself bottoming out often and in order to not mis-click I had to raise my fingers higher to clear. I'd imagine for someone like a document writer would find themselves "tired" if going long hours. Oddly, I am told the browns were the lightest to actuate (45g) compared to the Cherry MX black (60g). As mentioned by previous reviewers, there are different pressure on the keys here. The one I noticed the most is on the backspace key as it seems the heaviest. Keys normally pressed with the pinky were the lightest as the infamous emacs pinky and you can remap that CapsLock to ctrl pretty easily.
* Real estate and size: Yes, this tenkeyless, no numpad, does save me desktop space so that my right hand is closer to the mouse. This is an ideal size for me and I find that my hands are now in front of me more than a full size keyboard. One thing that did bother me was the height. It is much higher than my previous one so now I feel I need a wrist rest which this doesn't come with. When I look back at other tenkeyless products images online, this seems to be normal.
* Interface and cable: As mentioned earlier, this is indeed a USB keyboard but comes with a PS2 adaptor for those seeking NKR, n-key rollover. I cannot say much about it since I do not have a PS2 port. The cable is rubbery and comes with an attached velcro tie so you can shorten or pack it up in the future. This cable is attached and not removable. Also to note the cap and scroll lights are right about the "insert-home=-pageup" keys in case you may be desiring to install new keycaps for the capslock as others put that light into the capslock keycap itself.
* Cost: This is much cheaper then the Topre keyboards out there which can get over $300. There are cheaper tenkeyless mechanical for $100 but I went for Filco for the purchasing convenience (shipping, returns, etc).
Overall I am happy with the Filco Tenkeyless even though the dimension in the height and key-press length is taking me a bit to get accustomed.
I did switch out the keycaps to PBT double shot caps; the caps this keyboard came with are fine but I believe they're ABT and will wear down a little quicker.
The only issue I have with this keyboard is the spacebar has a little bit of a ringing to it after pressing down. Other than that, I love it.

The keyboard arrived promptly with no issues
edit: After 10 days of using it, many of the key caps are beginning to fade (see photos), especially the "alt" and "e" key. I knew the keycaps weren't good before I bought it, but I didn't think it would be this bad.
