To use them you just pinch the top white "ears" to open the lower orange part. Place it over whatever you need to secure and then push in on the lower ribbed section on each side of the white part to lock it into place.
I have successfully locked towels the on my porch rail, which is about an inch thick. I can't attach my thicker beach towels directly to my rail because the material is too thick, but I can still secure them by draping them over the rail and securing just the towel halves in the clip.
I make sure to always thrown these in my beach bag. I've also used them to secure the blanket to my cooler so it doesn't fly away, wet/sandy clothes to the outside of the bag, and as a heavy duty chip clip in a pinch.
I can see these being useful this fall at craft shows to secure my banners and panels to the frame of my canopy. Honestly, they have so many practical uses that I can't name them all.
