“This is the best of what anime has to give .... lightning in a bottle” - Otaku USA Magazine

Product Description

When the three powerhouse creators of Eden of the East, Gurren Lagann and Neon Genesis Evangelion bumped heads, they spawned the series that broke all the rules then broke the mold.
Naota is a detached sixth grader afflicted by the pangs of puberty. He's fooling around with his brother's ex girlfriend when a crazed girl on a motor scooter runs him over, brains him with a bass guitar, and moves into his house. This pink haired girl, Haruko who claims she's an alien hurls Naota into the middle of a mega corporation's secret agenda. Oh, and now giant battling robots shoot from his skull. Mix in mind bending animation and tunes that echo through your cerebellum to top off the trip that will have you falling hard for FLCL.

Originally done as a Gainax's first bite into the new millennium, FLCL(also called Fooly Cooly and Furi Kuri), this 6-episode OVA has recently been changed into an ongoing TV series backed up by Adult Swim. Being a meltdown of several anime tropes and gag humor, FLCL went on to being a genre-defining movement within anime, as well as American comics and animation.

Naota is a grade school student living in a small Japanese suburb whose popular older brother is in America on a baseball scholorship. This fame has an effect on Naota's trying to live up to his brother's image, as well as his resident ex-girlfriend Mamimi keeps clinging to him. One day, a crazy girl named Haruko shows up riding a scooter and hits Naota on the head with her guitar. This leads to Haruko becoming his family live-in "housekeeper", all while strange robots repeatedly keep appearing out of portal coming from Naota's head, which usually make him look like he's either sporting a horn or a pair of cat ears. This never really defined plot device has unexplained things like Haruko being an alien, a space pirate being captured by the enigmatic company referred to as Medical Mechanica, also a covert military organization keeping tags on all the parties involved. These usually lead to outrageous battles with runaway robots, and Haruko's constant changing from one anime cliche to another in devastating acts of violence filled with fan service.

The OVA made a large impact in the otaku community, both in Japan and America, but it soared after it was broadcast on Toonami in nearly endless 6-week loops. This embarked Cartoon Network to ride the current nostalgia train of continuing previous shows like Samurai Jack and Invader Zim by continuing it in two more 6-episode mini-series set for 2018. There was also a 2-volume manga done in a sketchier style based on the anime that was printed in English through Tokyopop. The OVA was first released by Sync-Point, also being one of the anime series that they actually completed before going bankrupt, and then re-released through Funimation. Even though this could've been released as a single feature like Read Or Die, but it works much better in its uncut episode-to-episode format.

Very nice to have this on a BluRay- but just so you know... this is NOT in Widescreen. When they made this series in 1999, it was done in 4:3 format, so even though it is on a BluRay disc, it is still in 4:3 format- which is really not a big deal in my opinion seeing as when Series 1 was made (19 years ago).
Every once in a while you will see some moving/undulating lines in parts of the drawings, but it's not a lot of that on the disc- I guess it comes from processing the original to digital or something, but again, not a big problem in general.
I think it is nice to have Series 1 on BluRay, because Series 2 and 3 will be on BluRay, so it makes a nice collection. I have watched this disc 5 times now and I can't seem to stop wanting to watch it some more.
Bottom line: if you already have the DVD's of Series 1, that is great- maybe pick up the BluRay just for a back up in case you wear out your DVD version. But whether you have the DVD or the BluRay, you will NOT be disappointed. FLCL is a crazy ride of strangeness, creativity, emotions, angst, awesome music from The Pillows, confusion, and fun that will also have you wondering, "What just happened here?" and "What the hell is That!?!?!"
It's a complicated story full of back stories and freestyle writing and graphics, and you'll love it and want more, more, MORE!!! I recommend FLCL Series 1, 2, and 3 for people that like to think and figure things out, and get involved in the story- if you just watch FLCL only once, you'll miss so much of the story. You have to dig in and get fully involved to understand the story and this form of "freestyle" writing.
Buy this BluRay, turn your TV on, crank up the volume, and get yourself strapped in- because you are in for a wild ride!!!

This is what it's all about right here.

This package shipped promptly, in amazing condition and the contents within were a spectacle to say the least. I was amazed at how well done this series transferred over to Blu-Ray. Seeing things in such crisp and detailed quality was an experience I enjoyed every single moment of. The combination of great writing, hilarious pop culture parodies, stunning visuals, a killer soundtrack and additional content practically makes this item sell itself!

If you're new to Anime, or a die hard Anime fan or anywhere in between, this is a must have for your collection. FLCL is a hilariously chaotic and utterly fantastic Anime that deserves its place in the hall of greats. I cannot say enough good things about this six episode series. If you enjoy Evangelion or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, you'll fall in love with this spastic little treasure we like to call: Fooly Cooly. Honestly if you haven't seen this Anime yet, you should purchase this right away. If you have seen it before, it's worth the extra cash to own it on Blu-Ray without a doubt. This is the way Anime is supposed to be, fun, loud, exciting, different from the rest and leaving you wanting more.

5.0 out of 5 stars If perfect shows exists, FLCL is one of them

The Bluray
========
Basically an upscaled, cleaned up version of the DVD release. I had the Synch-Point DVDs but something's wrong with the discs because they're all cracking from the center (none of my other discs do that) so I had to rebuy the damn thing on Bluray again. I swear if this thing breaks again I'm just going to download it, but so far so good.

Sync-Point release is pretty good quality and extras wise so it's the same deal here.

The Show
=======
Basically a perfect coming-of-age story/anime parody/music video/mood piece.

It transport you to its setting totally and completely and immerse you in its nostalgic mood effortlessly.

No other anime show has come close in making me feel that a fictional place with its living and breathing characters actually exists somewhere, sometime.

Not going to rehash the praise so many already heaped on it, I liked it not because of other people like it, but because it's a damn good show. So many 20-40 episodes shows can't tell a story as well as FLCL, because of all the fillers. More shows needs to be FLCL, but in terms of return on investment it's going to take another perfect alignment of the planets for that to happen.

If you were to see just one ANIME in your life then you may or may not enjoy this work. It is the "Waiting for Godot" of japanese animation. I greatly recommend it but please note that it will be most appealing to experienced viewers.
