Very disappointing product

I have an older Krups coffeemaker and love it. I anxiously awaited the arrival of this new one but when it arrived I couldn't program it. It made good coffee but none of the other features would work. I couldn't see spending $100 for an item that wouldn't do more than a $20 coffeemaker so this went back to Amazon.

Expensive piece of plastic/ metal

I bought this (in black) at Williams & Sonoma for over $100 - thought I'd spend the extra $ thinking I was getting a quality item that would last . . . boy was I WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! My cheap Mr. Coffee lasted longer than this thing!

Day 1 - the plastic smelled sooo bad that it turned the taste of my coffee into a cupful of plastic, chemical waste - AFTER cleaning/ running vinegar through at last 4 - 5x

Throughout - it did nothing but leak, flooding my kitchen counter every time I wanted a cup of coffee - less then six months later the leaking got so bad that it was ready for the garbage can. One last attempt before deep sixin' it - figured that maybe the seal on the water measure just need a jiggle . . . w/ hardly any pressure - the thing jiggled right off the coffee maker into my hand b/c the plastic was so brittle.

Coffee also doesn't get all that hot & cools very quickly - even in the 'thermal carafe' which is perfect if you like lukewarm coffee that turns ice cold after adding cream

2 stars for looks alone

May be better off/cheaper buying a couple of disposable $40 coffee makers, replacing them every 6 mos

Carafe is clunky and awkward

Although the automatic features of this device are easy to understand, heaven help me if I ever lose the directions. After three-weeks, we still have an odd odor (new plastic/chemical?) around the coffee maker - doesn't seem to affect the coffee or flavor.

The carafe is clunky and awkward - I often poor water in top too fast and it splashes around the edges because the pot and pour spout don't seem to sync up properly.

It works, it's fairly easy to operate, and I'll continue using it until it breaks, but I wouldn't buy this model again.

bubbles in water level gauge

I am returning my second FMF 5 today (not bought from Amazon). Both my units have the bubbles in water-level gauge problem. This is not a small problem. The bubbles are large and long and can't be tapped out. It is impossible to tell how much water you've added. I called Krups and spoke with someone who said they've had a problem with these bubbles. He said the first complaint from consumers on this model was that the gauge responded too slowly in showing the water level, so Krups made some design alterations and now they have a bubble problem. He was hesitant in offering this information, and when I finally pressed him to state definitively that there is a known problem in the water level design, he began to backtrack, but he had already said it. He advised that I pull the tube off the unit (press down and unhinge it from the top) and drain it and start over. That worked for several days.

This unit will add 10 minutes to your coffee making routine as you try to figure out how much water you've added. I have been very happy with Kurps in the past, but this unit is unusable and they need to fix it or get it off the market. It is impossible to imagine that this escaped their notice during testing.

Do you enjoy the aroma of plastic?

I am a huge krups fan, so I thought I would outfit my new kitchen with a sleek new model, as Pro Aroma was no longer available.

This coffee maker is awful.

The stench of plastic that it emits during brewing and when you pour the coffee is disgusting. At least half of enjoying coffee is that wonderful smell, right? Not with this one.

Krups has been extremely unhelpful and will not acknowledge the issue. Their advice is to "descale" the maker. Because, of course, mineral buildup always smells like melted molded plastic. Good tip, boys.

Save your money, this is not Krups best work.

Like everything in the world, this coffee maker is lawyer approved. In other words it does not get hot enough to cause any harm. Unfortunately one minute after poring it is not hot enough to be considered a good cup of coffee.

Every day I have to warm my coffee up in the microwave.

This coffeemaker offers ease of use (very easy to fill with water without spilling all over, and fill the basket with coffee grounds) and ease of cleaning (completely accessible to clean out the grounds and drips of coffee). The stainless steel carafe keeps the coffee hot for hours, without making it stronger or burnt tasting (there is no warming burner). However, because of the design of the carafe, it is very difficult to pour out the last 1/2 mug of coffee without removing the lid.
I really like the white color of the coffeemaker and carafe with the staineless steel. So many of the coffeemakers are now black with stainless steel, which wouldn't look as good in our kitchen as the white does.
I look forward to years of use of this coffeemaker.
