Some of my favorite lines:
"Officer Robins, who looked like he had been around awhile, especially around food, was clearly the superior officer—at least in seniority."
"The menu said “fresh southern seafood.” I think that meant fried fish—not fish with an accent."
And the running line "the best realtor in the second largest of three small realty firms..."
A couple of years ago, my wife and I quite accidentally discovered Folly Beach while enjoying a brief respite from the Alaskan winter. Soon after arriving on the barrier island, we encountered Arctic Avenue. It seemed somehow prophetic. Soon after, we found The Pier and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast, complete with lovely waitress oozing southern charm and a spectacular view of the Atlantic. We were hooked.
Needless to say, as soon as I completed my hat purchase, I made the acquaintance of Bill Noel’s eccentric band of islanders. The characterizations are engaging, entertaining and completely believable. They truly smack of the rural South, without the social pretensions sometimes associated with the Old South of Charleston. The combination of a good whodunit and Mr. Noel’s obvious appreciation for the natural world of coastal South Carolina makes Folly a thoroughly enjoyable read.
We are hooked!
I'll admit...if it didn't take place on Folly Beach and Charleston, SC, I probably wouldn't have read more than 50 pages. But, his descriptions of the Lowcountry were so vivid and accurate that I had to stick with it. Charleston is my chosen home. I love it and Folly Beach passionately.
From my understanding, there are 11 novels in the Folly Beach series. I don't know if I will want to read them all, but will certainly try a few more. I have a feeling they will improve.
