The Regen MMR-X is our first micro-USB rechargeable and reconfigurable flashlight in the Maelstrom collection. You can easily switch the flashlight between five different user interfaces according to your needs. These interfaces vary from having one maximum-output mode to having all eight distinct modes ready for quick access. Additionally, it's one of the most compact lithium-ion 18650 flashlights in the world at just under 5.5 inches and weighing in at only 5.0 ounces with the battery. This rugged yet versatile Cree XM-L2 powerhouse will have your back in any situation with it's incredible range of lumens and a maximum continuous run-time of 35 days! The Maelstrom MMR-X ships with one 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery already in the packaging. This flashlight should only be used with lithium-ion 18650 batteries. Using any other batteries will damage this flashlight.

I got this light today from Amazon via UPS. Two day shipping is exactly that. I ordered it off Amazon because it was $27 cheaper than the 4-sevens website...how does that make sense? I bought it because the 190 lumen Quark Turbo 2AA I got in 2011 developed a malfunction. It seems to be a problem (flickering down to or starting out with moonlight brightness with fully charged batteries). I think this will require 4-Sevens to replace the head on my Quark Turbo. While the Quark Turbo is going back for warranty repairs (a 10 year warranty, how cool is that?) it was the perfect excuse to buy a new light.
First impression...I am used to recharging my 2 AA batteries in 5 or 10 minutes. Out of the box it takes FOREVER AND EVER for the MMR-X to reach a full charge, at least 3 hours. Shined at full power against a wall it doesn't seem more than 50 percent brighter than a generic 2AA 200 lumen Chinese light (Jetstream PA 20) i bought as a backup to my Quark. I guess the upside is that the MMR-X can be charged with the same mini-USB cord that almost everyone uses to re-charge their cell phones, so in the car charging is easy. The downside is that in the car charging will become a necessity.
When night fell I took both lights outside. Shining both lights against an overgrown woodland background at 50 yards the MMR-X was about twice as bright as the 200 lumen Jetstream. The center spot was much better defined on the MMR-X than the Chinese light. The same was true 8 months ago when I compared the Quark (winner) to the Jetstream (looser) but they were MUCH closer to each-other than the MMR-X is to the Jetstream.
Also, the center spot on the MMR-X appeared to be about twice the circumference of the center spot on the Jetstream.
So the extra lumens on the MMR-X seem be used in the following way: 1/2 of the extra lumens are used to to increase the brightness and 1/2 of the extra lumens are used to double the size of the center spot.
Because brightness is exponential to lumens that makes sense... the center spot on the MMR-X is twice as bright and twice as big compared to the 200 lumen light... Any photographer knows that light output is exponential to perceived brightness. 200 lumens x2 = 400 lumens, 400 lumens x2 = 800 lumens. So to double perceived light output of the MMR-X will require 1600 lumens...double that would be 3200 lumens, and so on...
So the MMR-X is 4 times as bright as the 200 lumen light...the center spot is twice as bright and twice as large (x2 brightness times x2 size of spotlight = x4 total brightness).
The size of the coma on both the MMR-X and the Jetstream was about the same with the MMR-X coma about 25 percent brighter than the Jetstream.
Once my Quark comes back from warranty repairs I think I will carry the Quark AA Turbo as my EDC on my belt and will use the MMR-X on my duty belt..The Jetstream will stay where it has been since I bought it, hanging next to the back door for walking the dogs or for use if the power goes out, a very functional use for the excellent and inexpensive Jetstream PA 20.
I will add to the review once my Quark is returned from 4-Sevens, perhaps with photographs of the three lights in action...
I can say that this light has all of the above and I have used many of the big name brands of lights for patrol operations. I have used their other Maelstrom lights which are great light but after my battery charger caught on fire, I wanted one that could charge without having to remove and charge batteries separately. This light it nice because you charge it with your cell phone wall charger or plug in to a computer (MDT) USB port to charge while working. No more plugging those cheap cigarette lighter type chargers in.
It had different modes which Four Sevens like to boast about, but I don't use them I just want as bright as possible, my life depends on it. The light's bezel is small, because the light is small. This means you won't get a large flood of light. But it's wide enough for room clearing. I would strongly recommend this light to anyone who has a need for a small tactical flashlight.
The only two ways I would like this light more is longer run time (which this one is on par with any other similar light NOT COMPLAINING) and slightly different programmable modes. I'd like it to have one press for BURST and a double press for HIGH to conserve battery life once I realize the brightest mode isn't needed at that moment. It would be nice if you could hook it up to a computer and set the program YOU want, basically a custom program. Right now it works by setting up one of their premade program sets, which aren't bad.
Update#1 i got a hold of foursevens through phone call since they never returned my email. the gentleman on the phone talked me through a common problem of the tail cap getting loose on the inside. when you take the tail cap off, you'll see a ring with two dimples. grab a set of small needle nose pliers and rotate clockwise to tighten. i was able to turn about half a turn clockwise, this seems to have solved my issue
