Product Description

Hidden far away from our time lies a valley full of unimaginable riches. Adventurers from all over the world set off to try to make their fortune here. Players purchase equipment and commissions in Valdora's cities. Only with the help of special equipment can they dig for gold and various gemstones. If a player undertakes a commission and delivers the requested gemstones to the house of the patron he receives victory points. Additionally he can hire a craftsman. Each craftsman specializes in gold silver of specific gemstones. The first player to have enough craftsmen with the same specialization may open a workshop. Workshop owners receive bonus points. At the end of the game players receive victory points for their workshops craftsmen and gemstones. The player with the most points has made his fortune in Valdora. All copies of Valdora also come with Valdora: Special Board 19. This special board allows players once per game to discard as many different colored craftsman tiles as indicated by the figure on the board.

Valdora is a great new game for our family. It is a challenge to learn the game initially because of its complexity. We consider it a cross between Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride. We learned to play from the instructions, which can be tricky. I like the fact that moves don't require throwing dice. After playing a few times and understanding the game, the pace of the game goes pretty quickly.

Valdora has some of strategy, but not much conflict. Each player works to get tools and complete commissions which earn points. Completing commissions results in controlling workshops. The game doesn't involve taking money or goods from other players (like Monopoly) so each player builds their score somewhat independently. Conflict can occur when two players are racing to controll a particular workshop.

This is a game our whole family is enjoying. We have fans of Settlers and fans of Ticket to Ride, but not everyone likes those games. This one satisfies all of our family of five.

Valdora is a stunningly beautifully produced title by Michael Schacht, which made the "Recommended" list for the 2009 Spiel des Jahres award. Given the importance and prestige of the Spiel des Jahres award in recognizing quality family games, that alone should make most of us sit up and take notice. It was also nominated for numerous other awards, and GAMES Magazine declared it their "Best Family Strategy Game" in 2011.

The basic concept of Valdora is that it is a pickup-and-deliver game. Players are adventurers, wandering Valdora, the Valley of Gold, trying to bring back valuable gems that meet the requirements of commissions (job cards) you've received. Along your journey are various items of equipment (e.g. chisel, pick axe) that you can use to help you out. Who will best be able to conquer the logistical challenges of Valdora, and be acknowledged as the most successful adventurer?

Right from the moment you open the box, it's obvious that Valdora has an immediate aesthetic appeal. And fortunately the game-play lives up to the high expectations created by the highly attractive components. It features very quick turns, thus avoiding any downtime for the players. Despite relatively straight-forward rules, there are meaningful strategic decisions to be made. There are many ways to get points, ensuring multiple paths to victory.

It's not for those who want their games to be free of any luck, or want the interaction with their opponents to be more direct or vicious. But as far as euros go, Valdora is a very solid family game that makes excellent use of the pickup and deliver mechanic, and offers easy-to-learn gameplay while still ensuring that players have to make decisions that matter.
