I liked Blaze. He was a growly ex-SEAL who lived on his own doing his thing day by day and taking jobs as a mercenary. He hesitantly took a job babysitting a young rock star who recently came out and was getting death threats.
Gareth was sweet. After tagging after his brother and his bandmates most of his life, he was pulled into the band when an accident injured their bass player. Gareth was an amazing guitarist, but he was still getting used to being in the limelight.
Neither of these guys were very happy to be stuck with each other, but keeping Gareth safe took priority. Things were cute with these guys bantering back and forth, but I never really felt the connection between them. I had a hard time bridging the gap between the experienced SEAL and the somewhat naïve musician.
The main issue I had throughout this story was with the tense. It seemed to change tense back and forth frequently, in addition to changing POVs. It kept pulling me out of the story and just didn’t read very smoothly.
The other issue I had was that certain things happened very quickly. For example, the way the mystery played out was over in a flash and just wasn’t very convincing. So, while the story was cute, it did not blow me away in any respect and left me somewhat disappointed.
After an accident leaves the lead guitarist, Paul in his brothers band injured, Gareth replaces him. The band picks up followers and hits it big, becoming a headliner rather than an opening act. When Gareth decides to come out of the closet, he begins to get death threats. The band hires Axel Blaze, a former Navy Seal, as his bodyguard. Neither man is happy about this, but they tough it out.
When I read the blurb I was so excited. I love rock stars! Unfortunately the book fell sort of flat. You listen to Axel describe himself as a complete jerk in the beginning of this book. I wanted to see Axel as more of an jerk, but I just didn't get that. He needed to be rougher around the edges. I thought Gareth would and should have put up more of a fight about having a bodyguard. The name calling while hilarious, but added almost too much of a lightness to the book, that I wouldn't have expected. I think this book would have been better had it been darker and grittier. The plot is supposed to be serious and the book just wasn't dark enough.
They mystery portion of the story was carried out nicely, and the author kept me guessing as to "who done it", but the romance portion was lacking. The sex was spicy, but I wanted more emotion from the characters.
The thing I absolutely loved most was getting to travel and see Europe with Gareth and Axel.
All in all this was an enjoyable read!
They love each other and Gareth is patient because he knows his man will come back to him.
Well written, great storyline...I can't wait for the next one. Go SkullBlasters!
This is a new author for me, she grabbed my attention QUICK!! A story of a bodyguard assigned to a job, who tries his hardest to remain professional, but ends up being drawn to his client. Fret is full of action, suspense, and sexual tension. A DEFINITE 5 STAR READ if you're a fan of M/M!!
Skull Blasters, a heavy metal band is on the road to stardom. An accident finds their lead guitarist unable to perform. Gareth, was content to helping the band behind the scenes. His proficiency with the guitar led him into the spotlight. Hating the womanizing role he felt he had to portray, he decided it was time to "come out" in regards to his sexuality. Now he's receiving threatening hate mail.
Axel has taken on many different assignments. Babysitting has NEVER been one of his required duties. Accepting the job, he takes it and his client's life seriously. Gareth's safety is his number one priority, however there is something deeper quickly rising to the surface. Is it just the 24/7 contact or is there a possibility at a relationship brewing? Can Axel block out the sexual attraction? Once the case is closed will those feelings remain? Found out in Fret!!!
