For those who have never installed a through-wall unit, it can have challenges!
This is the second installation of my handyman career and I don't foresee doing it again.
I chose the only viable location for the unit and cut through the drywall, but to my amazement, there was an electrical wire running vertically beside the stud, where none was expected. This wire turned out to be connected to a wall switch on the other side of the room, to power one side of a wall outlet for a lamp. I wasn't aware that outlet was switched. Oh, well. A trip to the hardware store, install an outlet box and reroute wiring. Next phase: my exterior wall material is stucco and I had to lie on a sloping metal roof to cut the hole in the second-story exterior bedroom wall. I burned through a couple of masonry blades trying to go through the 1" stucco cement and chicken wire and plywood, before I gave up and brought out the masonry grinder/saw that I had previously only used to cut bricks. That made short but extremely dusty work of the wall. I then sealed off all openings into the exposed wall cavities, installed and leveled the a/c wall sleeve, secured, trimed, caulked and painted inside and out. All in all, a pain in the butt project, but, oh! turning it on and feeling that rush of cold air made it all worthwhile.
The black guides to attach the side fins was a bit confusing from the manual, but I called Friedrich and they
sent me some pictures to clarify how to install them.
For my situation the install was easier since I have sturdy storm windows so I did not need the extra support
One tip for those installing. Make sure you flip the black plastic vent control lever down before you put the front
grill cover on since it's tricky to do so afterwards.
