In order to be satisfied with the product, you need to know how to use it. Here's what you need to know:
1.) The product is sensitive to temperature - You need to ensure that the contents are at least 70F. Be sure its been at 70 for manh hours - A lot of people try and use a space heater to warm the product - Sure you get the metal container and the temperature measuring sticker to read 70, but the contents might not be. Be safe and let the temp rise and get to 70+ for a few hours - you will get a lot better application this way.
2.) Shake the containers well. Like a paint can thats sat for awhile, you need to ensure that the contents have been thoroughly shaken.
3.) Try to apply to a clean, dry warm surface. If you apply this to a dirty, wet or extremely cold surface, your foam may have trouble adhering. - Warm the room/surface and vacuum/cbrush your surfaces clean - a little prep will make the work you are doing a lot more robust.
4.) Don't over apply the material. A big problem people have with trying to use these kits on their own is they are trying to use this like the stuff they get from the local hardware store. You shouldn't apply this product more than 2" think in a single pass. Use multiple passes to build up to the thickness you want. Let the product sit for a couple minutes between each pass. Most of the time, if you plan your application you can route it so when you finish a first base layer, you can go fight back to the beginning and do your second pass without stopping. This is important because...
5.) You need to plan your project and have your area accessible! The product sets up very very fast (as in 10-15 seconds). Unlike cans of foam from the hardware store that stay tacky for 15 minutes, this is chemically activated. This means for optimal work, you need to be able to keep working until you have run out of materials or your project is complete. Stopping for more than a few seconds can cause your spray nozzle to clog up - Try and plan your project so you dont have to stop.
6.) Protective gear - Seriously. This stuff is nasty when it gets where it shouldn't. Get a tyvek suit to protect you, Eye protection, gloves and a respirator. Again, get a tyvek suit to protect you, Eye protection, gloves and a respirator. If you are using this in an area that has finished surfaces, mask them, put plastic down etc. This is a great adhesive... making cleanup hard if you haven't prepared.
What its great for: Air sealing, Moisture/vapor barriers, and thermal insulation. Ive used it a lot in insulating basements, attics, walls, ceilings and to stop squeaky floors/stairs (if you can get to the underside).
I read the directions front to back. It required the bottles to be at 75 degrees for proper flow and curing. My application was inside our shuttle bus that we are converting to an RV. Since the vehicle was outside and we are still in the latter part of winter, it was in the high 40s, low 50s. I taped plastic on my walls and floor and placed a small space heater in the area to warm it up. While that was happening, I went on to other tasks. Every so often, I would come in and check the temp with my temperature gauge, and when the temp of the bottles was at 78 degrees, I prepared the bottles for use, suited up put my respirator mask on and removed the space heater and my extension cords for safety. I sprayed the ceiling and the product laid down nicely, no issues whatsoever. The additional tips worked out great since if you stop for about 30 seconds, the product begins to cure in the tip. Changed out the tip and finished the job.
I'm not a professional foam sprayer so when I went back to "fill in" certain areas, I ended up causing lumpy spots. Not really that big a deal, that can all be cut or shaved off.
I would absolutely purchase this product again for my next spray job!!
Hope this helps others.
