The Frye Company is the oldest continuously operated shoe company in the United States. Founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a well-to-do shoemaker from England, and family-run until 1945, Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America's Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-American war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. When home-steading drew adventurous New England families to the West during the mid and late 1800's many of the pioneers wore Frye Boots for the long journey. Today Frye remains true to its roots with its line of heritage boots, but continues to innovate as it introduces chic new handbags, pumps, and sandals to its collection.

They are classy and versatile. I got the brown pair, and they look great with skinny jeans and a flowy tank, rolled up boyfriend-cut jeans and a blazer, or even just a summer dress.
This is my 7th pair of Fryes, and as with all of them, they are top quality and craftsmanship. Very durable.
I highly recommend these, if you have narrow feet. If not, these may not be for you.
I'd say these shoes are a tiny bit narrow (I have a medium-width foot that's narrow at the ankles and wider across the toes), but you can easily get them stretched at a cobbler/shoe repair place. (Another thing to have the cobbler do is put grips on the soles--leather soles can be slippery on smooth floors). Or just keep wearing them. When I first put these on, they felt too tight, but as I walked around, I could feel the shoe starting to conform to my foot. Please note that this shoe will probably not accommodate heavy-duty orthopedics. Maybe a thin insole and a heel grip, but those thick, gel cushion things are going to seriously cramp your foot.
It's true--your heel will slip out slightly as you walk, but I expect that problem will sort itself out once I've fully broken these in, just as it's done with all my other 100% leather oxfords and boots. But until that happens, it's best to wear these with a thin, smooth sock (or no sock) rather than something bulky and rough that will rub your ankles raw.
The leather Frye used for these is great--substantial and sturdy, but not so stiff that they're painful. I wore these today (after getting the toe area stretched a little) and walked all around the office, etc. and felt zero discomfort.
Finally, these are just adorable in person. The slightly upturned toes and wooden heels make them a little funky, but they're still perfect for a business setting. The heel adds a small amount of height, but the shoes are just as comfy as flats. The cognac color is lovely, though it's not quite as warm and reddish as my monitor portrayed it. It's more of a neutral caramel brown. These shoes are great under slacks or skinny jeans or tights and a skirt--really, they can be worn with almost anything.
I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. The initial price may seem high, but I think they're worth the investment. The style is classic and these shoes have soles and heels that can be replaced by any decent cobbler, I expect I'll be wearing them for decades.
ETA: I've had these shoes for a few weeks and worn them maybe a dozen times. They are fully broken in now and, as I suspected, the heel no longer slips. The breaking-in process was painless. I always wore these with thin trouser socks or tights and had no blisters or raw ankles. I love these shoes!
I am following up on my review, and still love my oxfords. I wanted to add, I am short (5'2) so I tend to steer away from flats or shoes with a heel height of less than an inch and a half. I love the height of the heels on these oxfords- it's just enough so I get some subtle height :)
Sizing: like many reviewers these shoes run about half a size and in some ppl a size larger than normal. As this is my second pair I can say with wear and a breakin period eventually the shoe conforms to your foot and the large size delta goes away. I normally wear a 10 and could get away with a 9 in these. But I purchased the second pair in a ten due to the conformity of the shoe. They will be large for a while and if this bothers you order half a size down.
Wear: as these shoes have leather soles depending on your level or wear you can wear them out. I have walked through high water repeatedly in them and it doesn't damage them nor does it leave them stained which is definitely a positive. I'm on my second pair mainly bc I've worn the sole down. This took about two years and a lot of travel running in them wading in them etc. I walk several miles a day in mine between work buildings. they have been a reliable pair of shoes and even the worn down pair I have now still look good enough to wear with dress slacks to work.
Style: if you like oxfords this is definitely a shoe you'll love. It seems like with this latest round of design they've fixed not what I'd call a flaw but my original pair had a pointed swooped up toe. Which for the first couple of months made it look like I was wearing witches shoes from the wizard of oz until I broke them in. It seems as if the toe is flatter (less swoop) which is good. Works great with everything from dress pants to jeans. I've even done shorts capris and a skirt.
Comfort: I find these shoes to be incredibly comfortable as noted by my ability to walk several miles a day in them without irritation to my heels, ankles, toes etc. Also if you're someone who doesn't wear heels but doesn't like flats or pumps this is a great hybrid shoe. It provides good arch support and you can walk with ease in them. Again an excellent work shoe choice.
Definitely a well built shoe. If you're looking for a work, date, or anytime shoe that can double as a comfortable walking shoe then this is for you.
