Tough studs and weathered leather lend FRYE's Jenna Studded short boot tons of attitude. This engineer-inspired silhouette crosses genres with a monk-reminiscent strap across the throat while a .75-inch heel keeps this look from falling too flat. As advised after reading dozens of reviews at various sites, i ordered the Jenna in a 1/2 size down. Though they fit a bit snugly in the toe bed, they were very wide at the heel. As I know this sort of leather eventually stretches, I, too, would advise ordering 1/2 down unless you wear a really thick sock. I wouldn't go as far as to say they were comfy--they're stiff, extremely heavy, and clearly require a break-in period. But I have an edgy fashion sense and am willing to endure some pain for the fabulous rock n roll meets moto look that this boot brings. Or does it?
The fit was exceptionally unflattering. So much for moto boots, more like rain galoshes. The top of the shaft--generous but not ridiculous for those with average calves--was not my issue. Rather, the ankle area was the big problem. I have dainty ankles but they're certainly not freakishly small. Yet the leather gaped around them and caused the least flattering silhouette I've encountered in a long, long time. (And I'm a total bootaholic). So having a block of leather add 3 inches of width to my ankle is not a good look--one I haven't rocked since the 1st grade when mom forced me into the aforementioned galoshes. I'm ok with a masculine, un slimming boot, but on me these looked more like footwear for Dr. Frankenstein's monster.
Additionally, diligent shoppers my notice that in various images, the Jenna Studded Short's hardware varies from a beautiful gold/brass to a silvery gunmetal. This may not matter to some, but I much prefer the brass.Read more ›
