FRYE offers a fearsome, full-lace look with an instep zipper, eliminating the need to retie.
It's a cinch to walk tall in the Melissa boot from FRYE. Crafted in lightly burnished leather, this foxy knee-high boot looks and feels great right out of the box. The full lace-up front provides a slim fit for a shapely silhouette, while the zip-in entry banishes dressing hassles. A lug outsole and simple block heel, including a rubber insert for longer durability, complete the profile.See all Product description

This is my fourth pair of Frye boots and these are as amazing as I've come to expect Frye to be. I usually wear a 7.5 and these fit great; I have about a 12" calf and they hug them like nothing else! I bought brown and I like the warm, rich color of the leather. The boots did come with some minor scuff marks but they'll get like that with wear and tear anyways and I like that it adds to the look. The leather is relatively stiff but that's important because that way they'll retain their structure and keep your ankles and legs looking slim. Because of the quality of these boots it will take a while to break them in but I actually didn't find them uncomfortable at all! Some of the other reviewers had talked about not being able to wear these boots all day but, while they are a little stiff, I found they are comfortable from the first fit.
All in all, this is one of the best shoe purchases I've ever made, they're worth every penny and I'll be wearing them for many, many years to come. And it doesn't hurt that Katniss Everdeen, Emma Swan, and Black Widow wore these boots in their prospective films. :)
1. The leather is stiffer and somewhat shiny.
2. They are narrower in the footbed.
3. The shaft is narrower-especially in the ankle area.
4. The heel is slightly lower.
5. The toe is more rounded than squared like the Campus.
All in all, I like them...but I love, love, love my Campus boots.
I bought the dark brown color, as it was much cheaper than the others, and I figured it couldn't actually be as bad as everyone says. It is. They look like fake leather. I hope as they break in this improves.
Many reviews noted that the laces are very short. This is also true. At present, I don't have enough lace to lace up the hooks and also tie a normal shoe knot. However, one can buy longer laces, so this is an inconvenience, but not a major strike against the boots.
There were also a lot of other reviews that indicated that the boots were very narrow, or would not accommodate a high instep. This puzzles me, as I feel like these reviewers must not understand how lace-up boots work. You loosen and tighten the laces at various points, to ensure the boots fit properly. Yes, I needed to loosen the laces around the instep so that they would fit comfortably, but that is just part of adjusting a pair of boots.
Heel rubbing/"wear thick socks"
This seems mostly true, though I've only worn these boots a handful of times. I can wear them for a 9-hour sedentary workday, or for a 4-hour evening out that involves walking a couple of blocks, but my heels begin to chafe at the end of those periods; I try not to wear them multiple days in a row, lest I develop full-fledged blisters. However, I have experienced this with previous pairs of (non-Frye) boots, and usually as they break in, it goes away.
Yup, they scuff easily. Either embrace the worn look or be prepared to give them a gentle polish after each wear (not necessarily with shoe polish, but with a soft cloth).
These do fit like a glove, and make me feel like Wonder Woman, which is why I chose to keep them even given the awful dark brown color. I covet the lovely red tones of the standard brown, but I got mine for less than $200, and the standard brown was twice the price, so I feel like it was an adequate tradeoff. I hope these boots will last for many years.
