I coach an FTC team (Team 6369 Designosaurs), and have encourage all of our members to buy and read this book. A lot of this information is stuff that anyone will learn by hanging around for awhile-- but you get it without the hanging around part. The authors hit just the right of being informal without being flippant. All is well organized by section, and highly readable.

And (what every kid wants to know) this book will help you win more matches. Read the section on strategy twice. This is the sort of stuff you only pick up from years of hanging around FTC.

This is the new 2011/12 edition of the only book specifically about competing in FTC robotics. The new book has timely information, including a new section on WiFi with Samantha, as well as a section on plastic fabrication techniques, plus many new tips in other sections as well (now over 400 tips). This is especially helpful this year, since FIRST has allowed almost unlimited use of plastic in the new game this year. In all, 40 pages of new information, plus many new illustrations and code examples, make this a must-have volume for both rookie and veteran teams. Although some of the information here is available from other sources, it is scattered and difficult to find, plus there is material here that is unique to this volume that I have never seen anywhere else.

Disclaimer, I was involved in the production of this book (although I receive no royalties from it), but I have already heard directly from coaches who have used the new book that it does everything I say above, and they are very happy to have this volume as part of their arsenal!

If you're new at this, or want to explore the idea of a FTC team, please get this book. I waited until half way through our first season to get it, and my only regret is not getting it sooner. I love that he separates his tips, hints and secrets out. You can skip through the chapter to find the section you need info on, or read it like a traditional book. It's written in an almost cliff note style, so finding information is quick and easy. Have 5 minutes, pick it up and read 3-5 tips & hints. It's not written in long paragraphs that build on itself, it's short, sweet, to the point bulleted information points that helped our new team tremendously!
