We picked this up at the local bookstore and I LOVE it! The tree is so cute and my girls (6 & 8) loved coloring the shrinky dinks, making the tree, and then decorating it. I grumbled a little about the price but it was definitely worth it. I could see it being a great Thanksgiving project for grandparents and grandkids while the turkey cooks. We all (3 adults included) enjoyed coloring the shrinky dinks. I did use our own colored pencils because the selection in the box is limited (no skin color!). After all these years, shrinky dinks are still cool to watch in the oven:-)

I've bought and used this product as well as many sets of shrinky dink plastic. This one is nice as there are pictures preprinted on the plastic; they're ready to color (as opposed to having to tediously trace your own image). The kit contains materials to make a little "tree"; it's nothing more than silver pipe cleaners twisted around a central dowel. You might be better off with a very small fake tree from the craft store, but the finished ornaments (1/2"-1") are scaled perfectly for the little tree you can build.

Unlike another reviewer, I did not have problems with shrinking the plastic from this kit or any other of the kits I've owned, even after forgetting a trayfull of shrinkydinks and leaving them in the oven way too long. My only shrinky dink caveats are to use the plainest, thinest, cheapest pan you've got. Those fancy stoneware pans might cook great brownies but they take forever to heat up so aren't such a good S-D choice. And I've found that it's best to let the S-Ds cool on their pan a bit before taking them out. They're just a smidge flexible straight from the oven but cool and harden quickly so if you pull it off your pan right away you'll warp it and then it will harden like that.

First-so much fun. We loved coloring them and watching them shrink. Coloring inside the lines? Not important because they shrink! My 4 year old was very pleased with his work. BUT the first box was missing the silver pipe cleaners, the second box had a broken tree stand and the third came complete but the tree was wobbly and not glued into the base. It took 2 weeks to get a complete set plus 2 extra errands to return the box to UPS. I'd still do it again because it was so much fun it was annoying though.

My kids (9, 7, and 4.5) and I finished this project over the weekend, and we had a BLAST!

Shrinky-Dinks are designs cut out from a special plastic that shrinks in the oven, going from about 2-3 inches to about a half-inch. They're tiny!

Pros:

Lots of different designs which you color yourself with the included colored pencils. Side note - my little one scribbled all over one design all in one color, and I went back over it with some other colors, and it actually kind of worked - the medium is somewhat forgiving.

Instructions were very clear, with plenty of pictures and large print making them easy even for a kid to read and understand.

The finished tree, I'll admit, doesn't look as nice as the one on the box, as it isn't all that easy to situate the pipe cleaners in perfect randomization. That said, it's adorable! It's a foot tall, and it's got all those cute little ornaments on it. Maybe the best part of it is realizing that with the sturdy base, you can use any pipe cleaners and beads you want to make a different little tree. Still, the included star beads and pre-cut stems were great.

It comes with colored pencils, a little hole punch, and hangers. In cheaper kits, you'd expect to see maybe bits of string to tie into hangers yourself; this one has little metal rings you bend open and closed, which is easier than tying off a string while holding the ornament in place. I'd also expect a cheap kit to have suggestions on how to punch the hole, rather than a tool to do it with. Nice touch!

The punch is far more durable than you'd think. I had zero problems using it. It's even got a little container for the punched bits so they don't make a mess. Also, the inclusion of the little hanger rings is inspired.

These are cute, but you have to cut them out yourself which is a huge pain with little kids. You also have to punch holes in each ornament and often the hole doesn't line up properly. In addition, you may wish to use your own colored pencils. That being said, it still is a decent set and looks cute when finished.

I put this set on my daughter's Christmas wishlist and my mom purchased it for her and gave it to her the night before Thanksgiving. To all of our amazement it provide a few hours of entertainment for 4 generations of family staying at my mom's that night. My grandmother, daughter, and sister-it-law colored in the pictures. (The pencils suck in terms of ease of use because it was super hard to distinguish the colors, especially for my grandmother, because only the tip was a different color, all the pencil bodies were the same tan color. But I hardly consider this a flaw. If we had been at my house, we would have used our own colored pencils.) I cut the shrinky dinks out, my daughter punched holes (with provided hole punch) and my mom helped her put them in the toaster oven. Everyone huddled around and oowed and aahhed as the shriveled up and then laid down flat. My 35 year old police officer brother took it upon himself to construct the tree, which was probably the hardest part, but he had a blast. Then we all decorated the tree together and marveled over the ornaments we created. Many, many photos were taken and we will proudly display the tree every year.

We liked this project so much that I am going to order the valentine's day tree for my daughter and her friends to do at her birthday sleepover. I highly recommend.
